He has finally released a statement, here. My report of our conversation seems consistent with it.

For those of you haven't seen it yet, here is the satiric website which has caused all the trouble.

You can see a wide variety of reactions the news has provoked on the thread here. It seems that calls are growing for his resignation.

That's about as bad as the descriptions of it sounded, from my point of view. One joke, repeated over and over. A joke that I feel tells me a lot about the people who find it funny, and especially the people who made it.
