As of today, I've dropped a total of twenty pounds. It's nice to be able to look in the mirror and think, damn, girl, you're really starting to look pretty good.

Edited to add: here is a comment I added below, and I might as well add it here.

One must see the beauty within at any weight. There were things I definitely liked about myself at a higher weight--my hair, my hands, my arms and legs.

But as I've lost the weight, it is as if the true lines of my face are being slowly revealed, the way that Michelangelo said that he saw the angel within a block of marble, and all he had to do was to cut away the extra marble. It is important to acknowledge that the angel was always there--I simply think it is more visible now. I like the curve of my jawline more at a lower weight. I prefer the way I fit into my clothes. I prefer my stomach at a lower weight. I prefer the fact that I feel lighter at my feet.

Oh, congratulations!

I've lost 13 - as of last Sunday - and I am just delighted about it. Feeling good, too.

I've been using 'SparkPeople' but I don't think I've learned to use it very effectively - I just treat it as another tool to keep me dedicated.

I don't need to loose weight, but I would like to learn more healthy eating habits (after having to *put on* weight for most my life, I foresee a problem with needing to maintain weight), would SparkPeople help me there as well?

Yes, I certainly do think so. I'm recommending it to everyone. You tell it your goal weight and it gives you a calorie range and tells you, when you enter your food each day, whether you have managed to stay within the calorie range. I think this would work if you need to gain weight as well as lose weight. And there are many, many articles on healthy lifestyle in general (exercise, reducing stress). If you want to keep track of certain nutrients (am I getting too much sodium? Not enough folate?) it will let you track up to 75 different nutrients.

I can't recommend this website enough. And it's all FREE.

I really work on my eating because I'm diabetic, but I'm glad I can honestly say I look good at any weight. It was hard work on my head, but the pay-off is more permanent. I hope you were just exaggerating and don't really think that you didn't look good before.

You are correct of course--one must see the beauty within at any weight. There were things I definitely liked about myself at a higher weight--my hair, my hands, my arms and legs.

I'll just gently nudge you a bit further and suggest that the first sentence works without the word "within."

You're a lovely woman (in addition to being smart and powerful and creative and loving and a host of other adjectives) and lost none of that when you were 20 pounds heavier. I'm glad you feel better and that you have reached tangible preferences.

You, of course, have been good-looking all along, but I give to you the "huzzah!" of support at reaching this milestone that you have desired.

I've added this to my original entry:

One must see the beauty within at any weight. There were things I definitely liked about myself at a higher weight--my hair, my hands, my arms and legs.

But as I've lost the weight, it is as if the true lines of my face are being slowly revealed, the way that Michelangelo said that he saw the angel within a block of marble, and all he had to do was to cut away the extra marble. But I agree that the angel was always there--I simply think it is more visible now. I like the curve of my jawline more at a lower weight. I prefer the way I fit into my clothes. I prefer my stomach at a lower weight. I prefer the fact that I feel lighter at my feet.

Yay you! You're one of the people I look to as an inspiration on how to eat healthfully and well, and how to get re-motivated even after temporary setbacks. It's true that it's important to love yourself and not loathe yourself regardless of weight, but doing the hard work of changing diet and exercise habits is also a way of showing love for yourself. Thanks for sharing yourself with all of us!

I've lost 12 so far. And if you take it all the way up, I've lost 22. I lost the first ten before I found sparkpeople and the second 12 on sparkpeople.

I can't thank you enough for telling me about it.

starting to look pretty good. !!! ?
Heh. I guess these things are always a matter of perspective and it's difficult to see ourselves as others see us. Had I been asked, I'd've said you've always looked better than "pretty good."

Woo! Congrats!

I hear you on beauty. I posted about that in my SparkTeams too. That was something I had to work very hard on, because I thought I was fat and ugly when I was thin. If I couldn't accept myself and see the beauty in me when I really was fat, I knew I'd never be able to accept myself and see the beauty in myself when I got thin again either.
