I stepped out of the house this morning into the darkness of 7:00 a.m. I could see the girls waiting for the school bus at the corner; as I watched, the bus pulled up to take them to school.

I picked up the newspaper and went back inside, where the first thing that caught my eye was this headline:

Girl, 13, choked, raped in St. Paul: The girl was attacked on her way to school Monday morning.

It happened within sight of her own house. Not my neighborhood, but . . . urgh.

Yeah, I saw that same article. Molly doesn't walk to the bus by herself yet, but still. It would be overprotective to walk a thirteen-year-old to her school bus stop; a kid that age should be able to move around by herself with some autonomy, within reasonable limits, and "a couple of blocks to school / the bus stop" is well within those limits.

On days such as these, the fact that my girls know karate is a real comfort.

It's Tuesday. It must be dead child day. This is seriously the reason I no longer get the paper. How dreadful.

Oh, my God. Those are moments that make a parent tremble.

Yeah. Take some comfort in your girls' strength, skills, and courage.
