Gacked this from [livejournal.com profile] ellen_kushner, who said,
For decades, now, I've been trying to get over the fact that I never got to have a tabletop gingerbread house like everyone else (I mean, c'mon; didn't everybody have a mom who spent her time putting together little fashionable & fanciful seasonal treats for her kids but me?), ornamented with frosting and raisins and candycane shingles. . . .

But now I see the light. I realize now that what I really need is the complete Battle of Helm's Deep instead.

What a fool I've been.
Wow. Some people really do have too much time on their hands.

I must say, though, that the Tootsie Pop catapults are a particularly inspired touch.

Oh my goodness gracious. This reminds me of Christmas Eve parties we used to have at a friend's house (a particularly atheistic bunch - they used to tune in to the Compline service at St. Mark's and heckle) during which we'd construct a gingerbread edifice. Although he will deny it, [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick once hid a little paper corpse under the porch.

I've lost track of the moral of the story, but it's something like "Tell Ellen it's not too late. She can still have that gingerbread house. Just don't invite Chris."

The only time I've ever spent with Ellen Kushner was at Minicon 22, when a couple of people and I ducked into an unused programming room late on Saturday evening to assemble Easter baskets for a bunch of the kids from little green plastic strawberry boxes. Her panel next door ended, and she came past the door of the room where we were working, saw what we were up to, and joined in to help.

K. [I sense a pattern]

I think it's marvelous, myself. And yes, the catapults are way cool. (I wonder if I could get my coworkers involved in something like that over the holidays next year....)

My mind boggles, and I'm not sure yet whether in a good or a bad way.
