If you haven't run across this whacko, here you go. Note the touching poem, which seems to conflate the horror of the evil spread by Harry Potter with the shootings at Columbine.

What a nutcase.

Edited to add: Here is an excellent, thoughtful response to Laura Mallory's campaign to ban the Harry Potter books.

Gah. I can read her stuff about HP and think, "She's an idiot." And plenty of people will write eloquent defenses of HP. When I read what she's writing about witchcraft and neopagans, I just want to explode, because the manifold eloquent defenses and explanations of my religion will not get the airplay the HP defenses will, and it makes me so angry that this stupidity is still running around in 2007. Argh.

You are right, it is the most egregious slander.

Please count me as a Christian who is entirely aware that neopaganism is a fully-realized religion which deserves respect, not condemnations of "evil Satanism."

We appreciate that.

(In return, allow me to offer at least one pagan who doesn't believe that all Christians are evil oppressors and who, in fact, has a great deal of respect for those who do deeply have faith.)

So, a teenager and a registered nurse are now all we need for a scientific study and proof? *boggles*

If I'd known that, I would have saved quite a bit of money getting those degrees!

That other article you link is just wonderful. "By their deeds you will know them."

Yes! I certainly think it deserves a wide audience.

Thank you for that second link. That really opened my eyes to a whole other side of the issue - and one that REALLY illuminates the unsubstantial nature of the mission of this most vocal of Harry Potter detractors.

What I appreciate about Heather's post is her reminder of JKR's fight for the protection of children. Ms. Mallory claims to be fighting for the same thing, and yet when comparing the two side-by-side like that, it's a powerful point.

That, combined with the Alexandra Pelosi documentary on evangelical Christians in America that I watched last night, has really given me the shivers. It makes me said said that so much of our country's voice is being used to vocalize such ignorance.

And that should say "sad" rather than said, twice. I'm worked up...

Was that "Jesus Camp"? "Hell House"? Or something I haven't seen yet?

"Road Trip," or some such, I believe. She travels the deep South, talking to different evangelical groups, most notably Haggard and his congregation. It's a little frightening because they're all going on about the power they have to sway politics, and there's an interesting segment where they demonstrate how they influence children to think a certain way.
