More re: Lorne
May. 17th, 2003 11:27 amHere's a front page article about Lorne and his wife Rene that was in the Star Tribune today. And this, more about the accident.
What really hurts, and what makes it all seem so stupidly unnecessary, besides the fact that the accident happened at all, was that they were thrown from their car because they weren't wearing safety belts. The man who hit them was going perhaps over 100 mph. But he was wearing his belt, and he lived.
Thanks,
papersky, for doing a doughnut toast for him. You know, I don't know if I'll ever see the doughnuts put out on the Fridays from now on without feeling a pang.

Date: 2003-05-17 09:39 am (UTC)I am happy that I grew up in Australia, and that wearing seatbelts is a reflex. I'd no more not wear a seatbelt than I'd drive without tires on my car.

Date: 2003-05-17 10:51 am (UTC)We witnessed an accident less than a week after my mother-in-law's death - a pickup went off the road in a construction zone and rolled. The driver also was thrown from the vehicle (no belt) and died. It was traumatic to see. My mom was lax about belts when I was young (our car's belts were very uncooperative), but my father always insisted, and when Mom got a new car when I was 12, we started using the belts all the time. I can't *not* wear them now - I feel too strange without one.
Again - my condolences.

Date: 2003-05-17 10:15 pm (UTC)Don't have any doughnuts handy. Here's a leftover (my last, in fact) piece of Easter candy in memory of Lorne and Rene.
Not wearing my seatbelt is a bad habit I've slipped into. Maybe this sad news will be further encouragement for me to take those extra few seconds.
