There was a particular bill that I knew was due, but I hadn't seen it come in the mail. I kept asking Rob whether he'd taken it in from the mailbox, but he steadfastly denied seeing it. Finally, in exasperation, knowing it was overdue, I drove out to the entity's corporate office and paid the bill, basing the amount of the check on what they had in their computer system, complaining to them that it had never arrived.

Tonight, I found the bill. Stuffed in a corner on the floor of the dining room, next to the windowseat. Nowhere NEAR the mail table, which is in the living room, nor in the drawer where bills are put that need to be paid.

On top of the bill was a pile of mail from Rob's post office box and on top of that (which is why I didn't even realize that mail was even there) a pile of paperwork from Rob's store.

Now, really, wouldn't you be more than a little annoyed by this???

I'd be quite annoyed, yes.

Not only _would_ I be, I _have been_ irritated by something v v similar when my husband does it.

It would depend a lot on how I was feeling otherwise. If I hadn't a care in the world and had nothing better to do than take a nice drive and meet some new people I might just go 'tra la la.' If I was already feeling stressed out with too much to do and frustrated by a long pattern of similar occurences I'd probably want to bite somebody's head off.

Yes. Although that usually happens to me when either [livejournal.com profile] mizzlaurajean or I moves the stack of bills as part of some cleanup activity. Not finding things where I know they were is a major anxiety-inducer for me.

Dan and I both commit this error at times, and I must admit, I do it more than he does. It's as if we need retraining every few months. If you have any paperwork/mail in your hands at the time you enter the house, it goes on the mail table. Then when it's there, it's easily (and deliberately!) sorted into the various sub-piles in the office.

Annoyed is one option. You could also choose to be amused.

Well, probably, if I weren't usually the Rob in your story. Unfortunately, our household doesn't HAVE a Peg, so this kind of thing is par for the course. Bit by bit, I have managed to switch almost all of our bills to automatic online payment, which makes life easier. I recommend it.

I'm afraid, in this instance, I'm Rob.

Because I would not only say I hadn't seen it, I would truly believe I hadn't -- and really, the way my memory works, it's very likely that I'm telling the truth.

You have my husband's sympathies though (he's our Peg).
