Fiona has started reading The Wild Swans for the first time. I kinda thought she would wait until she was a little older, but oh well. I guess she's always been precocious.

She's fighting with Rob right now because he is trying to take the book away so she can get to sleep, and she wants to stay up late reading it.

Rob just came into my office to tell me he lost the fight.

wow, that must be so... I don't know. Wierd and exciting and a whole bunch of things. It's great that she likes it, and I bet it's really cool for her to be able to have such active participation in your art. I always felt such a connection with not only the characters in the books I loved, but with the authors as well, and I can't even fathom how impressed I'd have been if one of them was my *mom.* Nor can I fathom how nervous I'd be (in the very hypothetical situation) if one of my readers was my daughter. Although I guess, preaching being the thing it is, she will one day be my audience and critic. Can't wait to hear more about the conversations that this brings.

Confession time - I see Wild Swans and think of the Jung Chang book I read at about Fionas age.

Rob deserved to loose that fight. Fridays are MADE for staying up late reading ;-)

That's great, Peg! I know you're nervous, but I do hope she gets as much out of it as the rest of it. It's a wonderful, wonderful story.

Has she read EHR already?

Yes, she read it several years ago. In fact, I think I read it aloud to both girls.

I suspect she'll enjoy it at least as much as I did (which is quite a lot). Some of the cultural references may need to be explained, but overall, she's picked well :).

Arrgh. Having offspring read your books _is_ a twitchy time. At least both my sons were legal adults before the organic fertilizer hit the fan...

When [livejournal.com profile] zorinth was first reading the Vorkosigan books, it was suggested that he might want to leave Mirror Dance until he was a little older and his reaction was "OK, if I stop reading about Miles and read Shards of Honor and Barrayar next, then I'll be a little older." Which turned out to work just fine.

Just take it as a compliment and let her stay up to read. :) (It's not a school night, so as long as she isn't keeping Delia awake it should be fine.)

If he had won the fight, a flashlight would have gone missing shortly thereafter, I bet.

Fiona says: "Flashlights don't work."

I think she finds the dimness of the light irritating or something.

Oh: she says it's because she always runs through the batteries too fast. And then when she asks Rob for more batteries, he asks why.

And then he says she can't have them.

(He's no fool.)

I used to stuff towels at the crack of my door and drape t-shirts over my lamp to make sure the light was dim enough my parents couldn't see the light on and tell me to go to bed, because if they had to tell me three times they were NOT HAPPY.
