Words cannot adequately convey the horror that is Delia first thing in the morning.

Oh gosh, I remember myself and my stepsister when we were in our teens. You did *not* want to wake us up. We were monsters in the morning. And I'm afraid it was that way for years.

We solved that one by getting Ael her very first haircut. :-)

It would probably wreck western civilization, but there have been suggestions made, from time to time, for starting school schedules at an hour when teenagers are actually awake. I have such horrible, horrible memories of staggering up to go to school, particularly of the low-grade nausea that always accompanies sleep deprivation, that my sympathy is pretty evenly split. I gather that I wasn't evil, just zombie-like. But it felt so completely awful, and it just went on and on and on and on, school, and then the day job. Some of us do not have adjustable wakeful times.

There was a study done once by a researcher that was trying to explain that it is a physiological basis for teens' sleeping patterns, that it wasn't just a matter of training them to go to sleep earlier and get up earlier... the researcher was able to convince a school to run one school year on altered times and study the behavior, etc. of the students to complement the physiological data... apparently their disciplinary incidents dropped dramatically and their state academic assessments rose significantly as well.

Oh man. I am still a horror first thing in the morning (or, more accurately, first thing right after I wake up). People have generally learned to give me tea (if not coffee or chai) and stay out of my way until I have had at least 2-3 cups of it. -- One morning, my mother walked into the kitchen to find my father and I silently staring out the kitchen window with identical blank wide-eyed Early Morning Stares on our faces, both clutching steaming cups of coffee, and she couldn't stop laughing for at least ten minutes.

My father and I used to drive to work/school together in the mornings, and the couple of times my mother went with us, she was always amused at our zombie-like silence and our complete inability to keep up a nice chatty conversation with her.

I dread Liam starting real school and both of us having to get up early for it.

Ohhh yeah. I have two switches in the ayem: Oblivious and Unfortunately-You-Have-Attracted-My-Attention. People learn to duck the second in favor of the first. Because usually I'll just sit there til someone finally annoys me enough to yank me out of zombieland and then I'll be all "WHAT? WHATWHATWHAT?"

....man, i miss coffee.

Unfortunately-You-Have-Attracted-My-Attention.

Thanks for the laugh. That's me at conventions. Too many people and weird hours means I need the decaf chai and the REAL oatmeal right away, thank you very much, and no one will die if I just get cinnamon, brown sugar and cream on the side.

Fresh berries will get you a smile.

I miss caffeine...

In looks or deeds, or both? I am unfortunately prone to very bad bedhead, and I'm also pretty incommunicative (is that a word?) in the morning, though if someone is around I make an effort to be non-snarly. But I am not a morning person, though if I've gotten enough sleep I'm not too bad. I will never be cheerful upon wakening, though.

My last boyfriend had to sit me down and give me the "Don't Give Me Cute & Clever Wordplay First Thing In The Morning 'Cuz IT HURTS MY BRAIN!!!! talk.

I behaved myself after that.

Maybe you should record her and threaten to play it for her children someday...or at Halloween, or perhaps for a new boyfriend...
