This is something that [livejournal.com profile] kijjohnson did last week and I liked it and want to try it, too. She did it because she was feeling a little isolated. As for me, I'm feeling a bit too self-absorbed, and I'd like to shake myself out of that.

Tell me something, some little detail of life lately. Lurkers, too.

Hi, lurker here!

A detail of my life lately--my husband and I were at a Chinese restaurant with our 16 month old daughter. We gave her a spring roll as we ate ours, and she watched for a moment, then copied us by reaching her spring roll over the plate (as if to dip it in the sauce) then pulling it back and taking a bite. It really brought home how closely she watches us and what we do.

Catie has learned to sing her ABC's and I need to get a video recording of it online, except if I film her she stops and tries to take the camera away and make her own videos.

And I owe you a dozen hugs - I'm catching up on LJ for the last few days, today, and I'm behind in my hugging tasks. :(

I have been eating a lot of cheese lately, and that makes me happy. Cheese has been the highlight of my day.

I love cheese! Have you ever tried it with truffle honey drizzled on top? A truly sybaritic experience.

We won our volleyball match last night! I played really badly in the middle game (which we lost, in large part due to my abysmal setting), but otherwise I didn't do badly. And I am thrilled about that because I just had my gallbladder out 2-1/2 weeks ago. And yesterday I got the first real exercise (I also went to the gym) since my gallbladder attack three weeks ago.

I skipped class (MLS program) last night, thanks to the delightful virus my sister kindly shared following her vacation, and I have guilt now. Which is, I acknowledge, stupid. Far better to skip class than infect all my classmates, and I emailed the paper due in to the professor so it's not like I shirked the assignment.

But still.

On the bright side, I wasn't sick enough today to justify skipping work again, so here I sit in the office. This work ethic thing is really for the dogs, innit?

My literary tastes seem to be influenced by the movies I see. After watching Capote I went on a Truman Capote spree and few days ago I borrowed the DVD of Myra Breckenridge (sp?) from the library. Now I'm about a hundred pages into the book.

Sometimes I get tired of fighting. Sometimes it makes me feel that I fight all the time, even when I should just learn to let it go, suck it up, and take what I get.

Then I shake myself, demand that I deserve better from myself, pick up my boxing gloves and keep going.

No wonder I feel bruised so often...

There are still leftovers in the fridge from the vast spread my wife made for my birthday party last Saturday. I'm looking forward to another omelet with the mushroom pate, and I've had sandwiches made with the chevre-with-cacao-nibs twice for lunch this week. The egg salad is long gone, as are the marinated cucumbers.

Now I've only had Trader Joe's pad thai for lunch, and I'm still hungry. I'm sorry that I didn't make myself another sandwich this morning!

Mice and guitars

Louie and I have managed to combine our two obsessions. Louie breeds and raises "fancy mice" -- far friendlier than the wild mice you catch in traps (although close enough to these wild mice to interbreed, and in fact, she has a couple that are "part wild") and goes up to our mousery to clean their tanks and feed and water them. I go up with her, and while she works on the tanks/cages, I just pick up a guitar and play, and play, and play. I have several different instruments (including the electric basses) and am rarely bored. Sometimes we put a CD in the boombox instead and listen to music. And two of Louie's does recently have given birth to litters, and another is expecting. Life goes on. (Note that I have never been insensitive to the new job search, even for an instant, but am in no position to help.)

The downer is, an estranged friend's father died last night.

The upside is, his illness gave me an opportunity to try to correct the estrangement.

My fiancé's mother died just two months ago, so it's hard knowing that someone else I care about is hurting that much, this soon. But I'm glad I could reach out to her, overcoming my own fear of rejection, and as long as we take things slow, I am strangely (stubbornly, stupidly) hopeful that we can heal the breach. It's a very weird mix of sadness and joy.

I think I may have Jim talked into getting a puppy. They raided a puppy mill close to Columbus a week or so ago and three vets took in all the puppies. One of them has two apricot poodle/mix and they're both in very good health. The vet is fixing them/updating their shots/waiting for a clean bill of health but says they're both extremely loving and happy-go-lucky. Jim said we can go take a look at them this weekend.

I know they'll win him over!

for two days in a row, a mother and son (he looks about four) have transferred buses at my stop. he wears a red snowsuit with a cape attached. the cape is made from a BBQ apron that reads "Let's get this party started!"

today he also sported an engineer's cap and a long string of beads. i am dying to take a picture of him to show other people, but then i'm being a creepy stalker lady.

I just picked up a lovely red stone dragon in Chinatown for 10 dollars. I plan on putting it on an appropriate base, and using it in the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game, as Smaug, and terrorizing men and elves and dwarves.

My teenagers are outside shoveling snow without having been asked - surely one of the signs of the apocalypse. (But more likely an excuse to go play in the blizzard.) Whatever the reason, I am thoroughly enjoying my snow day.

The daffodils and crocuses are out here, and the flowering cherry trees on the mall where I work are starting to bud. They won't be blooming for at least a fortnight, but the promise is there.

Since I caught my chest cold, my boyfriend likes making me say, "For the Forsaken" or "What would you have from me?" since my voice currently sounds like the voice of the Undead women in World of Warcraft.

I have also decided that Walgreen's should seriously consider moving their small books section right next to the pharmacy, as I bought a book yesterday solely because I needed something to read during my pharmacy wait.

I just inherited my grandmother's china doll (my grandma passed this autumn). My grandmother had her displayed since I was old enough not to knock her over (I was the first grandchild), and both my mom and I have made dresses for her through the years. As I brought her home, I realized that the dress I last made for the doll is faded beyond repair. I've been thinking about making a new outfit, and just hit upon the idea to use some of my grandma's satin shirts to do so, and embellish with some of her fantastic costume jewelry.

Likewise, my mom received a silverware set that my grandpa had filched from the U.S. Navy when he was in bootcamp. I remember always wanting to use the forks with U.S.N. on them, we're going to get bracelets made from them- there's someone in Southern MN that makes some really great ones, not your typical '70s style, but very modern looking.

So, those are just a few ways of cherishing and keeping memories alive that I've been planning. It's been a rough year processing through an event I knew was coming, so these things help sometimes.

Delurking.

In New Zealand it's late summer, coming into autumn, and it's maybe weird how dry, dry, wispy grass feels nicer on your feet than green grass.

Jack bought me a digital camera back which fits two old Pentax lenses (rather nice ones) that he wasn't using. This is the first camera I have ever had where you can swap out the lenses. And have to worry about things like apertures and such.

Quite the learning curve after all these years of point and shoot cameras.

I am studying French, and I just ordered a copy of the third Harry Potter book in that language. (The third may be my favorite volume.) I can't wait, though it will probably take me five minutes to get through each page. Unfortunately I've heard that they changed the names of some of the characters in translation, and that is kind of weird.

I've been working through the first HP in Dutch. Some of the name changes are reasonable (Sneep for Snape - pronounced the same); a small few I think are an improvement (Neville's toad is Willibrord instead of Trevor) and many are really annoying (Dumbledore becomes Perkamentus).

I don't normally buy things at airport shops because they're generally overpriced, but last Thursday I was in the Denver airport waiting for my flight to LA, and I was in a shop full of nifty jewelry and arty stuff. Most of it was beyond my price range, but the jasper stegosaurus was quite reasonable. I've seen semiprecious carved animals before, but never a dinosaur.

So now I own a jasper dinosaur, and I really need to get the shelves put up on my display cabinet.
