I did the entire five mile ride. I now have acquired an exquisitely ugly neon orange vest with reflective tape which goes over my coat. It's definitely a Glamour Don't, but it should help keep me from being hit. The entire ride took forty minutes, with packing and unpacking the bike (and changing clothes) adding a little time at each end.

I am definitely the slowest bike on the road. But I'm still pretty proud of myself. According to Sparkpeople, the ride should have burned about 200 calories.

Great job, Peg! I'm so impressed with how quickly you've gotten the hang of things and integrated this new activity! You win at life.

Can I share a little fitness victory of my own? You might remember I do a lot of walking for exercise. One of my favorite trails is a 1.6 mile nature trail that I did for the first time in January. The first time it took 38 minutes. The second time it took 35 minutes. I didn't do it again for two months due to the weather, but yesterday it was nice enough so I went out and walked it again. This time I didn't wear my iPod so it couldn't give me a beat to walk to. I just walked as fast as was comfortable.

I did the trail in 28 minutes. I guess all the other exercise I've been doing in the meantime has paid off!

Anything that helps keep you alive definitely counts as a Do. (Well, maybe not since the Cosmo editor took over at Glamour. Too bad, it's a Do in my book.) Also, past a certain level of decency, my policy is that Looks Don't Matter in workout gear until waaaaay after comfort and functionality are satisfied.

That's wonderful! That orange vest and reflective tape really helps. The flashing light on the back of the bike helps, too.

If you haven't gotten one, may I suggest you get a clip on light--one that flashes, I mean. The only downside to 'em are that you must remember to remove it as soon as you get to work.

I speak from embarrassed experience...
