Did you know that she was there? Well, she was, for a week! And what she was doing there? She was assisting at an orphanage, playing with the kids, serving meals, and helping with construction projects. This was a mission trip through my sister's church; here's some information about it. Both of my sisters (Betsy and Cindy) and several of their sons went, too. This was actually Betsy's seventh trip down there.

Betsy suggested that Fiona might like to go, and as promised, Fiona found it to be a truly eye-opening, perhaps life-changing experience.

She is experiencing a little problem with re-entry, mostly because her sleep schedule is thrown entirely out of whack. But she had a marvelous time.

I think this sort of thing would be great for nearly all American teens.

Hell even the adults. But yes a great way to open ones eyes and give you a new perspective.

Sounds like a terrific experience for Fiona! Let me further suggest a similar organization, Amigos de los Americas. They have a Mpls branch (I did their web site for a while), which sends local kids to Central America.

Great idea. I remember an acquaintance at college who spent a semester in South America. She'd been a very militant government-hater before her trip. After that, she would say, Yes, our country is screwed up in many ways, but we are still one of the most free and most prosperous countries, and should be very grateful for what we have.

I think that kind of thing is quite valuable for all so people start to appreciate their good fortune and maybe will be less prone to abuse it. I'm so sick of all the right wing jerks who think the world's poor people are just dumb or lazy.

I'd love to hear what she thought about it.
