This meme is making the rounds of the people on my friends list in Seattle, and since I'm going there this weekend to visit [livejournal.com profile] kijjohnson, I just have to join in, don't I???

We all have things about our friends that make us slightly envious.

Not in a bad way, but in a "Wow! I wish I had that person's hair/eyes/money/relationship/toenails/whatever."

So tell me what about me makes you envy me... then if you feel like it, post this in your LJ and see what makes me envious of you.

The one I posted for Kij had to do with you already! but I will post a larger aspect of it than just the pictures, I think:

From there it probably feels like you are struggling and never have enough time with Kij, but from here it looks like you have learned to balance having Kij half a continent away and have found ways to make time for just you two being best friends. I don't feel like [livejournal.com profile] gaaldine and I have found nearly that balance at this point. I envy you that.

What I admire: You do NOT give up. Sometimes it sounds like you feel like giving up, but then you post about it and get some good ideas and let the love of all these people buoy you up, and you go back in there and fight the good fight some more. Awesome.

What I envy: The traditions you create and sustain for your family around the holidays and seasons. I have nothing like that but love to read about yours.

I think it would be your relationship with Kij. Every once in a while it would be your daughters. Certainly the books you've written, and the knowledge that you've written things that have meant so much to a lot of people.

I admire your sense of responsibility but I don't think I envy it.

Aside from you marvelous writing ability, I think I envy your resolve. You get ideas and follow them through, deciding to commute by bicycle being the most recent. :)

You bike more than I do. It's cold here, and I'm out of shape. Soon, I will get the bike fixed up right and start riding around. And it will hurt.

How you handle your girls' distress, and how you've taught them to appreciate literature, and magic. You're much better at that than I am, I think. I envy that you live in a city with such diverse and interesting activities.

You have such an amazing grip on parenting. I read in awe, and take notes.

I envy your close-knit family, your joy in having found a partner to have two wonderful (and challenging!) daughters with, and your drive to find the balance to get yourself through a time of more blogging and little fiction production.

Just one of those things is very special, and you have three. So, even with the down sides of all those things, I would take them, oh, yes, indeed...

Your bravery and persistence and your ability to fit *so much* into your incredibly busy days make me envious of you. *hugs*

(It's not "envy", really -- since envy is wanting something someone else has so that you will have it instead of them -- but rather a healthy respect and admiration.)

If I thought I could be as good a parent as you, I wouldn't be as afraid as I am of having children.

Wow. That's a stunning compliment. Thank you! And if you do have children some day, I hope you enjoy them as much as I've enjoyed my own.
