The Fremont Arts Council organized a competition on artwork for the under bridge space in 1989 and the final selection was carried out by ballot during the 1990 Fremont Fair. Construction of the troll was funded by a city matching grant and carried out by volunteers.

This fellow pleased me quite a bit. I have actually been thinking about writing a short story about a troll under the Stone Arch Bridge--I'd talked about it with Kij yesterday. Seeing this might be taken as a sign from the universe that I should write that story.

To get an idea of the scale, that's a real Volkswagon Beetle he's crushing under his left hand, by the way.

Also visited: the topiary dinosaurs (no picture). We had fun looking in the various shop windows, although they were closed for business by the time we came by. Pity. I would have liked to have tried on the dress in the window of one shop.

Your post made me smile--these are all the things I saw in Fremont last time I was able to visit Seattle.

Is there a particular reason they're lauding Lenin with a statue in Fremont, Washington? Just curious. Also, that troll is great. And if you felt compelled to write a troll story of your own, I'd be interested.

Someone local liked the artwork and bought it second-hand after a town in Slovakia decided they didn't want to honor Lenin, according to Roadside America.
