I was called up before lunch, on a criminal matter this time. I liked the judge a lot; he was exceedingly polite to all the jurors and took great care to explain everything. The judge asked a series of questions; when I responded affirmatively to a couple of them, I was questioned further in private, and then the counsel for both sides conferred with the judge and decided they didn't want me on the panel. I was the first potential juror released. I didn't blame them in the least, given my answers.

So, back to the jury room again. I pulled out The Children of Hurin and spent a pleasant afternoon immersed in its pages. We were released at 4:00 to go home.

Did you ever see that 3rd Rock From the Sun episode where John Lithgow keeps getting rejected as a juror? He kept failing the "Do you believe what you read in the newspapers?" question -- first he said yes and got rejected by one side, the next panel he said no and got rejected by the other side. Finally at the last panel he gets asked the same question and panics and says "Yes, I mean No, I mean I believe whatever you want me to believe." (paraphrase) and he makes it onto the jury.

How is Children of Hurin?

I had been away from it for a few days, and so I had to read the opening again, which goes over the rather confusing genealogy of the elves--hard to keep it straight, even with the charts in the back. And I have to keep consulting the map to get my bearings. But I've read both The Silmarillion and The Lays of Bereliand, so I know the bones of the story, so that helps. And now that I'm well into the story, I am beginning to enjoy it very much.

The other compelling reading material being exhausted?
:)

FYI, got home okay if later than planned. As always. And my check-in bag was selected to be searched, and I'm missing my headphones and a couple other small items. Rrrr.
