Our local newspaper has started a new daily feature to kick off this Summer O' Potter: the Potter Blotter, where each day they will feature a Harry Potter-related story or discussion. Today's story featured a charming interview with a man who read the books, got fascinated and decided to make a wand for his son. It led to a whole new career for him; he now makes wands full-time. I loved the answer to this question:
Q: What do your kids think about your job?
A: My son and I try each [new wand] out after we make it. The law of averages says one of these times the garage door's got to blow up. It's got to.

Sometimes it's really fun to imagine being JK Rowling. Imagine: you've gotten kids to read who were never interested in books before. You've drawn attention to the plight of children in orphanages and to people with MS. People have learned all kinds of useful skills working on everything from websites to fanfics that were inspired by your books. People have formed strong friendships talking about your work. And as in this last case, people have been able to make a living doing something they love because of your ideas and inspiration.

Actually, it's probably a very good thing I'm not JKR - she's much better at it than I'd ever be. If I stopped to think about all that stuff, I'd be *insufferable*.

Yes, I agree. I am more impressed with the woman, with everything I read about her. It's great, not only that she has been rewarded for all her hard work in creating a kick ass series, but that she is using her money and influence to truly make the world a better place. She is a genuinely lovely and admirable woman.

Thank you for sharing! What a great idea for the news paper- I'm going to have to follow this online all summer. This article though? This just made my day. Heck, it made my week. What a great story!
