By the time I got the bike wrestled back out of the Jeep, the front wheel back on, and wheeled it into the bike shop, the derailler apparently decided it was over its snit and was working fine. The friendly mechanic put it up on the rack and checked the chain tension, and everything looked A-okay. "That's the way it is with this old deraillers sometimes," he told me. "Just don't shift so fast, especially when going up a hill or heavily loaded."

I can handle that. And no repair bill. Hurrah!

I was wondering how the heck a derailler could get so screwed up that it bound the chain even after straightening things out. Good news anyway. Enjoy the weather.

One of these days I'll build a ride with a Nexus-8 hub. Internal gearing, you can shift it while standing still without problem, much less to break, simple, straight chainline, much less maintenance. Downside: expensive, doesn't work with most new frames.
