Via [livejournal.com profile] buymeaclue who got the link from [livejournal.com profile] orbitalmechanic: What the World Eats, a neat photo essay showing a week's worth of food for fifteen families in various parts of the world.

I'm with [livejournal.com profile] buymeaclue: I'd love to visit the Mongolians, the Sicilians and the Egyptians, too. Yum.

The pictures for the Chinese family showed a lot more meat than I expected. Maybe they're wealthier than the average?

The common thread appears to be Coke. Doesn't anybody in the global economy drink Pepsi? Guess not. About the only families that don't have clearly branded CocaCola in the picture are the ones huddled around a wood hearth or fire pit. And the Germans, who had beer and bottled water instead.

I was a bit surprised at the immense quantity of bread in the Italy picture. With all the talk about the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet, I expected something a little ... I dunno, lower-glycemic. Of course, who's to say how representative these families are? Or if there is really any such thing as a representative family? You could probably get this much variety with 15 families from the U.S. if you picked them right.
