Oh, my thighs are burning. I rode the bike all the way home last night for the first time since surgery and all the way to work today on top of having the karate lesson. I was glad I had done so much stretching during my vacation, working on my hamstrings twice a day, and that I had stretched carefully before the class started. It helped a lot--I certainly wasn't the most inflexible person there.

When I got out of class, our senior sensei Mr. Sidner asked me how I'd done. "Oh, I absolutely sucked!" I said with manic cheerfulness, and he cracked up. And it was true. Mr. Dingmann (who led the class) very kindly didn't direct many comments my way during this first lesson but it was absolutely clear that after all, I haven't had a lesson in a year and a half. My form on my kicks was terrible, especially the hook kick, and my balance was extremely shaky. And I was slowest in the class on the hook kick/round kick combination. "But I knew I would suck," I told Mr. Sidner blithely. "I'd planned on it. So I went out there and flaunted my massive suckitude for all it was worth. I totally went for it."

"That's the right attitude," he smiled.

Yes, I have an awful lot of work to do. But I am happy to do it because I am SO glad to be back.

My hook kicks are abysmal. The rest of my kicks are mostly only silly looking. Sometime after we get the basement fixed up and find enough room for it, I'm getting a wavemaster so I can work on it at home. I particularly fall over when doing stuff like spin hooks.

Congratulations on getting back to karate! Sounds like it went very well. One can't exactly know for sure, but I'll bet all that stretching really *really* paid off; not even just in actual flexibility and in less discomfort, but probably also in reduced risk of injury.

*cracks up* On the other hand, karate seems like something you don't ever do halfway, so it sounds like you have the very best attitude about it. :D Enjoy the ache of a job well done.

Yay! I'm so glad you're back with it, and not letting the inevitable setbacks from time off make you stop enjoying yourself.

....d00d, that's awesome. That could apply to SO MANY THINGS.

Also, you sound so happy and energized and recharged! That's absolutely wonderful.
