I just ran a Google search on "Peg Kerr" which I do periodically out of morbid interest, mostly to see if any new reviews have popped up on my work. Ran across this, which I had never seen before:

Sistersville Daily Review
Sistersville, West Virginia

Saturday, July 31, 1937

Miss Mary KRUG and Miss Peg KERR left today by automobile on a two weeks vacation trip which will take them to New York City, New England States and a tour through Canada.

Am v. curious about this Peg Kerr, of a bygone generation. My name is not very common, after all. What sort of person was she like?

Out of curiosity, is Peg short for Margaret? I'm a Margaret, truth be told, but I use Meg. Apparently it is far more common to use Peg or Peggy. I know from grandmothers and great aunts that Peg was the normal abbreviation for Margaret, since I was named after a couple of them. Where it comes from, I don't know, but it makes me curious.

And disclaimer that I don't think you are nearly that old.

-Meg (who hates being called Megan)

My daughter is also a Meg-who's-really-Margaret. And you know, I have been very surprised by the number of people who say, "Meg -- is that short for Megan?" *sigh*

When she gets old enough (presuming she is the adorable one in the picture) instruct her to reply "No, and if you call me Megan again, I'll kick your butt". Works wonders. Of course, no one ever said I was supper popular with new people. I think the best reply I ever gave was to the SGA vice-president this past year. I had told her I was Meg on about 3 occasions. She came up to me one day and said the "Meg, that's really short for Megan isn't it?" routine for about the third time. Without looking up or stopping studying, I replied "Nope, it's Margaret, but call me Megan again and I will come over this table at you." She got it right from then on.

Then again, maybe your daughter will fare better than I have. One of these days, I'm going to learn and use my grown up name (Margaret). Yeah, sure.

-Meg

*note to self: Train baby to kick butt!*

The thing that surprises me the most is that people have no idea that Meg is a nickname for Margaret. "How'd you get Meg out of Margaret?" I feel like throwing copies of Little Women and A Wrinkle in Time at all of them. "Look! Characters named MARGARET who go by MEG!!!"

Then again, I do know a Megan who goes by Meg, so... *shrugs*

I think people just think, "wow, Meg is close to Megan, must be the same".

And I have all types of Introduction to ass kicking classes available. If you are forceful about your name, occasionally people get it right.

Yes, Peg is short for Margaret.

But the only people who call me "Margaret" are the bank, schools, the government, and telemarketers.

O my dear, that is *odd.* You must look her up and tell us all about this infamously previous Peg Kerr.

How fascinating. I wonder how old they were - if they were spinsters, or adventurous young women - and if they were actually driving? There can't have been too many women drivers in 1937.

It would be interesting to learn more about your name-alike. I'd be freaked if I met someone else named Laramie Sasseville.
