Here's a darn good question that [livejournal.com profile] choralgirl asked me about book 7, harking back to something that happened in the Chamber of Secrets in book 2:

If basilisk venom kills horcruxes, why didn't the venom from the basilisk fang that grazed Harry in book 2 kill the horcrux of Voldemort's soul that was in his scar? Was it just that the Phoenix tears that healed Harry neutralized the venom before it had the chance to kill the horcrux?

Hmmm. Either it's a Flint, or I'd venture to say the venom would have had to actually destroy Harry (kill him), as it destroyed the other Horcruxes, to actually work. So in that sense, the Phoenix "cure" did, indeed, neutralize it before that could happen.

I agree with the supposition that Harry would have to die to destroy the horcrux. If it were anything but inextricable from Harry's own fate, Dumbledore wouldn't have asked him to make the sacrifice he did. He would've sent him to St. Mungo's for a carefully-administered basilisk venom shot. :)

And forgive a fan who lives outside of the fan community, but... Flint?

What I'm wondering is what the Chamber of Secrets *smelled* like after five years of being locked up with a rotting basilisk corpse in it. Can you imagine?

I just assumed that the Horcrux didn't die from Harry's brush with the basilisk venom because it didn't kill him enough.

Hmm... maybe I just read quickly, but I thought that the basilisk had to physically break the horcrux, not just drop venom on it.

Further, it's clear that Harry's scar is a different aspect of a horcrux, since Voldemort can't feel the others (or their destruction) but maintains a two-way powerful connection with Harry.
