I've been listening today to one of the weirdest love songs I've ever heard, "A Heart Worth Loving (Hermione)" by the Whomping Willows. You can download the .mp3 for free at their MySpace page here. It's from the point of view of, what else, the Whomping Willow, which has fallen in love with . . . Hermione. I really like it--it's actually lovely and strangely moving.

Here are the lyrics.

It’s warm and happy at Hogwarts
But I’m alone [?]
The same place I’ve been for so long
Seen you round a couple of times
And you filled me with a light
That I never felt before
Hermione
What I’m saying might be awkward
And it might seem kind of strange
I can’t blame you for feeling that way
Even though we’re different species
I think you’d understand
If you just gave me a chance
Hermione
Hermione
Hermione
Hermione
I’m just a tree
Just a tree
If you could see
Inside me
You’d see a heart worth loving
You’d see a hand worth holding
You’d see a heart worth loving
You’d see a hand worth holding
You’d see a heart worth loving
You’d see a hand worth holding
Hermione
Hermione
Hermione
Hermione
People tell me love is painful
I should just stay away
But I’d be lying to myself
Your loving smile
Your bushy hair
And your compassion too
I know you’d never let me down
Hermione
Hermione
Hermione
Hermione
I’m just a tree
Just a tree
If you could see inside me
You’d see a heart worth loving
You’d see a hand worth holding
You’d see a heart worth loving
You’d see a hand worth holding
You’d see a heart worth loving
You’d see a hand worth holding
Hermione

Tell me about an off-beat love song that you really like.

It's not nearly as offbeat as this one, but I like Barenaked Ladies' "Go Home," urging the hearer to go be there for his/her love with analogies like, "If you think of her as Joan of Arc, she's burnin' 'fore you get your car out of park."

Most of the important love songs in my life are slightly disturbing, actually. The exception has been running through my head all day, the song I had in my head most of the time I was falling in love with [livejournal.com profile] markgritter, Nat King Cole's "This Can't Be Love."

Arrogant Worms' "Tokyo Love Song":

We had a love that was so bright
I used to dream of her each night
And rush to her side every morning
I had her all to myself
We never noticed anyone else
We didn't even hear the radio warning

Our love was no joke you know
It was the talk of downtown Tokyo
We'll be happy forever, I promised her
But just as I proposed
Her feet were made to touch her nose..
As she was crushed by a Japanese monster!

Our love was so true
But now she's three-foot-two
And she used to be five-foot-eleven
Her death was unintentional
But now she's two-dimensional
My angel is truly in Heaven.

And it gets worse from there. I love it to pieces! (Pun not intended.)

DUDE.

I was totally going to post that.

I am astonished to not be the only one to love that song.

It is a thing of brilliance, truly.

Leonard Cohen's "Joan of Arc", which is a romantic duet between Joan of Arc and the fire.
