Today is Veteran's Day, and so I want to give a shout out to all of you, both on my friends list, and for their friends and family members who have served our country in both times of conflict and of peace.

I offer up my prayers and best wishes for those who have been wounded, in body and mind. I remember your families who kept the home fires burning while you answered your country's call and who kept faith until your return.

And most of all, I send out a wish and prayer for peace for a world grown weary with fighting. Help us to find ways to resolve conflicts without recourse to violence, and so move beyond war.

Especially to you, Daddy, all honor and thanks for your years of service in the Navy. Anchors Aweigh!

Please leave a comment if you are a veteran, or if you have a family member or friend who is, or if there is something you or someone you know is doing to serve the cause of peace. Thank you!

Both of my grandfathers were WWII veterans. Grandpa Vern died before I was born; Grandpa Rich passed away just this year. They both served for the right reasons, and did amazing things, and I'm terribly proud to be their granddaughter.

One of the reasons I'm studying International Politics is to do something relevant to help with humanitarianism within the current system, and make it less superpower dominated. Basically, so a world war can't happen again.

As for world wars, my grandfathers fought; my dad's family is all military.

Lest we forget

My Grandfather was in the Navy in WWII, my dad was in Vietnam. My brother spent 10 years in the Air Force, including time in Afghanistan and Iraq and my Uncle graduated from the Navel Academy and spent time in the Navy. Oh, and my sister and brother-in-law was in the Navy for a year. I think that's it.

Happy Veteran's Day.

Both my parents are/were (my dad's dead) WWII vets. They met in the service. How else could a dirt poor Okie meet a privileged Catholic girl from New York? They were both Navy vets, stationed at Mare Island near San Francisco. My dad's brother was at Pearl Harbor, too.

Let's see:

Dad: Vietnam
Uncle Delbert: Korea
Uncle Brother (it's a Southern thing): Vietnam
Father-in-law: WWII
Uncle Charles: WWII

Those are the living veterans in my family. When Dad passes, he will be interred at Arlington. Truly ironic because he has steadfastly refused to visit the memorial, but his ashes will apparently have a view. I'm not allowed to tease him about that either.

On Memorial day, we honor:

Uncle Otis: WWII
Uncle Mason: WWII
Grandfather Stevens: WWII
Uncle Marion: WWII
Uncle Raymond: WWII
Uncle Jake: WWII (I think on this one, I'm not positive -- he died 10 years before I was born and I've never even seen a picture of him).

I usually just lurk, but you did ask for people to comment. My family has always been military. If I hadn't been cursed with a very bad back at such a young age, I probably would have joined up in the Navy myself.

Dad: Army, fought in the very tail end of Korea and then was stationed in Germany until just before Vietnam, then was in the states until 71 as an armored artillary instructor.
Uncle Orville: Marine, through Vietnam
Their dad: Army, end of WWI through WWII, career man
Mom's dad: Navy, WWI
Uncle Perry: Navy, Korea
My oldest brother, Brian: Army, 70's
Yougest of my older brothers, Lee: Marines, 84-90 as a Harrier mechanic, and has spent time since in the civillian sector working in electrical engineering on military planes and at NASA
My neice's hubby: Navy, 87-03 (She's 19 and he's 47. lol)

And my nephew is about to enter Marine boot camp for the second time because he blew out his knee the first try and had to spend a year in rehab to pass a physical again. :-)

Thank you! I'll try to, but I lurk a lot. I'm nocturnal and don't often have anything useful to say that hasn't already been said better by someone else by the time I see a post. ;-D

My husband was in Vietnam and my 21 year old daughter is now in Iraq. Both sides of the family go back to WWI and WWII.

Oops...and the American Revolution.

Thanks so much for the opportunity to honor my father-in-law, a career Army officer who served in both Korea and Vietnam, and who is celebrating his 75th birthday today.

Also my dad, who was a WWII vet. Just within the last 2 weeks I came across his service papers, including a catalogue of his unit's entire tour of duty and a very beautifully worded thank you letter from Admiral Forrestal, the Secretary of the Navy after his discharge in 1946 (which he sent to everyone, but that doesn't lessen its poignancy).

My grandfather was a Marine during WWI, though he primarily served in the Caribbean.

My father was career Air Force, I had a cousin in the Navy (out now because of failing health). My cousin Jason is Army and has done 2 tours in Afghanistan. My cousin Robin (other side of the family) is also in the Army and has done 1 tour in Afghanistan and 3 in Bosnia.

My maternal grandmother came to Canada at the age of four. Her father had been gassed in WWI and could no longer work as a stone mason. He came here to work and live with his brother.
