A lovely crafty idea for Christmas
Nov. 20th, 2007 09:55 amI have previously mentioned the blog Curbly.com: DIY Maven, which you can follow at the syndicated feed
curbly_diymaven. I like them because they have all sorts of ideas about how to create lovely things for minimal amounts of money. They just posted about creating this charming little tree:

"Want a Christmas tree for the holidays but don’t have the room? Or maybe your budget is a little tight? Here’s a great way to make a tiny Christmas tree from evergreen trimmings, which you can get for FREE at just about any Christmas tree lot, if you ask the attendants nicely. Other things you’ll need include:A 4-inch clay potThe clay pot, bamboo pole (I’d probably scrounge up a bit of doweling), even the plaster of Paris isn’t terribly expensive. AND you can reuse the pot/dowel/plaster structure next year!! Sweet! Miniature trees make wonderful hostess gifts during the holidays.
Plaster of Paris
Oasis Floral Foam
Aluminum Foil
Garden Shears
Miniature Christmas Tree Oranaments
And a bamboo pole

Date: 2007-11-21 04:34 am (UTC)My 4yo daughter and I went to Michaels and bought pots, plaster, etc... TODAY after reading this. What a fantastic idea! Fun for her to pick out beads that we'll string together for ornaments. ..
We now have gifts (cheap) for her preschool teachers, dance teacher, grandparents ,etc...
YIPPEE!!!
Thanks!
..ANd sorry about the taco pie fiasco. Sounds yummy to me.

Date: 2007-11-21 03:04 pm (UTC)8 lb bucket of plaster of paris was $5 and some change.
Sticks were about .10 each.
Oasis was most expensive... $5.76 for 4 blocks
And for the ornaments, I bought gold beading string and some little colorful balls that look like traditional ornaments. My daughter will string them and hopefully we'll come up with something nice. Two bags of beads and the string were about $7.00 total.
So all in all, pretty cheap. OH! we have quite a few evergreens that'll do the trick for the actual tree.
I will keep you posted on how it goes. Likely will do the first "batch" this weekend.
Happy Thanksgiving.
