Dinner

I poured myself out a glass of wine while I considered what to cook for dinner for my family.

It is really appalling what a light head for one lousy glass of wine I have.

Very few groceries in the house . . . absolutely zero incentive.

Damn it.

Why can't one of you come over and cook dinner for my family? I'm ever so tired of cooking for these ingrates. They would probably be more likely to accept anything made by any of you before they'd accept anything made by me. At this point, I really don't feel like bothering.

Maybe I should order a pizza.

Maybe I should have more wine.

Frozen vegetables, some tofu, and sesame sauce in the wok. Rice in the rice cooker. It's great when I'm too tired to do anything else.

That or Mac 'n Cheese.

But definitely have more wine.

You know, I could be wrong, but I would bet a lot of money that tofu is not a standard pantry staple kept constantly in stock in the Ihinger household. Maybe chicken breasts, though? You could do basically the same thing with chicken breasts.

But the girls won't eat it either way.

Pizza sounds good. :-)

HERE IS SOME SAGE ADVICE.

Order the pizza, then drink more wine. Usually if I have too much wine first, I get the order wrong.

When I make it to the US - count on it.

Yup, you should. After all, it's Saturday :-D

Have more wine and order the pizza. Another day, I'd be happy to share my garlic cheddar biscuit and baked mac and cheese recipes with you. ^_^ I'm a bit too far to cook.

Maybe you should have people come over and cook. One taste of my famous rhubarb and liver casserole* might make them appreciate your cooking!

*just joking

I wouldn't be much help, since I tend to get on my high horse about cooking. Your family needs my mother as guest cook. She's very patient about food foibles, for some reason (will leave onion out of a recipe because my brother-in-law doesn't like it, for example). My attitude is closer to "I cooked this for you because I love you and want to show off for you and what do you MEAN you don't like it?"

Pizza sounds pretty good, though. And more wine. Mmmmm, wine.

More wine!

It's always good for whatever ails you.

I put squeaky things in far too many of the dishes I cook, trust me on this.

My advice is this: make something that you know YOU will enjoy for once. If your family shows up and says "Ewwww! I won't eat that!" tell them you knew that when you started and were just too tired to cope with their bullshit.

Their choices would be the following: eat what you have made with no further comment, make something for themselves, spend their own money to get something (do not finance them), or go hungry. The key thing would be that you are not to hear one more word about their food preferences, 'cuz you just don't give a damn anymore.

One night of going hungry (if it comes to that) is not going to do them any harm.

Then pour yourself more wine.

I agree with the earlier comment--let them order pizza. Keep a stack of take-out menus for times like this and remind everyone else that they know how to use a phone.

I don't know if you've already been pointed at this, or if your family would turn up their noses anyway (or if endlessly pureeing vegetables would get old after awhile), but my sister-in-law got a copy of Deceptively Delicious for Christmas, and I thought of you when I saw it.

Good luck with the war.
