I am fervently hoping Australia doesn't let them in.

My understanding is that it's the US memorial services, not the actual funeral. After all, we've got our own lunatics here already, I'm sure (although I'm not convinced they'll go so far as to picket the funeral of someone that the rest of the country is mourning.)

But I'd love to see the battle over whether or not to give them visas. There are some interesting precedents in that area, and we've had a change of government...

Well, U.S. citizens don't need a visa to enter Australia as tourists. However, I think you're correct that the Phelps cult is planning to picket in the US, which is reprehensible enough. Who funds these people anyway?

You know all those times when you were a kid and the grown-ups chanted, ritually, "Ignore him; what he really wants is attention"? And you knew that what he really wanted was attention and your unhappiness, and was thrilled to have found a way to get both simultaneously?

Yah. That.

no person on earth sends me into fits of apoplectic rage quite like phelps.

yes, genius, god struck him dead for *playing* a gay man in a movie. and yet god allows all those people who played jesus-hatin roles like herod or pharoah (moses-hatin) and countless other go right on living.

i'm stopping now, because to let myslef get worked up is to give him exactly what he wants. if i stick my fingers in my ears, maybe he'll just go away.

I wouldn't expect anything less from that wart on the arse of the universe. He truly makes every aspect of the world he lives in a little more petty and horrible, just by existing.

Fred Phelps, meet punk rock.

Yep, the so-called Reverend Fred Phelp’s crew (I don’t think the man himself braved the cold) was there in all their venom spewing splendor. There to protest another Iraq war soldier’s funeral.

When I pulled up to the stop light in front of the funeral home I could hear them from across the wide road, singing their bastardized version of God Bless America, it’s the one where they sing “except fags” all kinds of other epithets. I remembered the documentary about Phelps from a few months ago where the bikers would rev their engines to drown out Phelp’s crews singing and chanting.
It occurred to me, there were no bikers.

The Phelpsians we’re just too loud for my tastes. Then I remembered a couple of immutable truths I learned from ten+ years of touring in a rock band: (1) music can save a life and salve a soul and (2) the power of wattage is louder than any heckler.

So, I drove past and came back to a stop in front of the Phelpsians, still chanting their brand of hate, still too audible. There I was stopped just six feet from them, between them and the funeral home, and something WIERD happend to my car; all the windows rolled down, the stero turned up as loud as possible, and Minor Threat’s 1983 album Out of Step was BLARRING from my car. I couldn’t figure out what was going on, so I just turned on my hazard lights and waved people past me.

Oh my gosh. I just heard about this. Those crazy idiots! I hope no one listens to them. I guess none of them have acted before, or known any actors.

Did Phelps and his crew ever show up here to protest at the funerals for the people who died in the 35W collapse? I don't think so, and I think the little git's just blowing up steam.

This might make you feel a bit better. I've read that the family of a soldier who died in Iraq & whose funeral was picketed successfully sued Phelps & his wacko baptist church.

For eleven million smackers.

Being the twisted pervert that I am I just HAD to go to the Wesboro Baptist Church website. Found a listing of where they're planning to picket "God willing":

So, anyone that just happens to be around when WBC does their booger dance, well...

They're so cute when they froth.

Phelps used to make me angry; now he just makes me sad. He's not right in the head, and he's warping generations with his hate and anger. I take comfort in the stories that I hear of people standing up to him and his followers/family.
