As [livejournal.com profile] madrobins helpfully points out, today's Alan Rickman's birthday.

To celebrate the occasion, here's a recording of him reading Shakespeare's sonnet 130.

That voice . . . *swoons*

I bought that CD of people reading sonnets based on your recommendation a few years back ... and I still love it. His is one of my favorites.

No idea. Found it on YouTube. I imagine they are stills from various movies or plays he's been in.

The one where he's standing with his arms around a seated woman whom I believe is Kate Winslet is probably a publicity still from Sense and Sensibility.

I was happy to see the one with him in the bathtub on the hillside; it's from an odd little gem of a movie called Blow Dry.

You may have heard me mention this before: someone once left a comment to my journal about Alan Rickman: "You know how some people's voices can shatter glass? Alan Rickman's voice can shatter underpants."

This has always amused me. Because, yep, it's quite true.

And yet the first role I saw him play was the Odious Mr. Slope in The Barchester Chronicles. Funny how he was able to live that part down quite well.
