Well, Delia has said that she wanted to try more foods with different grains. So I thought maybe she'd go for it, since it had rye flour. Unfortunately, no. Delia proved surprisingly reluctant to actually help me make it, and then the whole family turned their noses up at what was put on their plates. I couldn't believe it. I mean, how many times do I have to try to come up with something new and interesting?
Maybe I had the proportions wrong or something. I knew I should have stopped and picked up the cloves since I was out. I certainly used enough sugar.
I mean, really. What's not to like?

Date: 2008-04-02 03:41 am (UTC)But the recipe is really real (although no, I didn't serve it to my family). Kij is 100% Norwegian, and grew up very aware of her Scandinavian heritage. Her mother had some Norwegian cookbooks, and Kij was talking about them one time, and someone sent her a couple of really old Norwegian cookbooks. So for the past year or so, to amuse her friends list, she's been periodically posting these authentic, incredibly gross recipes, all tagged "Food of My People."

Date: 2008-04-02 12:51 am (UTC)I don't know why you try. It's like beating your head against a brick wall and not stopping even though it hurts.
I'd buy them a loaf of cheap fortified white bread a giant jar of peanut butter, a gallon of ice cream (if they even eat that), and whatever other 5 different foods it is they do eat and vitamins and cook up for yourself whatever you want.
Given how thin and active your girls are honestly I'd worry more about calories then content. They will survive and someday they may like more foods.
If they want to try what you make for you great and if not oh well at least you like it.
Actually seeing you eat such a variety of healthful foods may still impact their eating choices in a positive way as they get older. Even though they can't stand those foods now.
Palate wise they are not at a great age for making much progress with broadening their horizons with food.
You have other meaningful things you share with them.
A lot of the things you make sound delicious to me and
I'm not a picky eater but that recipe doesn't appeal to me and there is no way I'd have come anywhere near it as a child.

If Delia decides that fish are O.K., you might try a traditional Finnish recipe: Fish Head Soup! ...at least, this is the nearest I can find to a recipe for it, though a quick Google yielded a few references to it.
Seriously, I think she should make a list of everything she DOES like and use that as a basis for cooking her own supper every night. Saves Mom the guesswork. Then again, why not have the Picky Eaters take on the Family Supper duty and retire yourself from it? If you're not a picky eater, you'll probably eat whatever they come up with, and they can argue amongst themselves and leave you out of the fray. Sounds like a win to me!
But you might not want to tell them about the Fish Head Soup.
