I went into work for half a day on Friday, and then came back and spent the afternoon with Delia. She is slowly getting better, although she's not back to normal, and probably won't be for awhile. She still was a little feverish on Friday, intermittently, but the sore throat and fever was entirely gone by Saturday.

She has lost weight and her color is bad, and she is quite weak. This is a kid who was about ready to test for black belt who now has to stop to rest when climbing a flight of stairs. Lot of naps this weekend. But she woke up today and said in a tone of surprise, "I'm hungry." That was the first time she actually wanted food since last Monday. I rejoiced when she took a second taco at dinner tonight. She'll be going back to school tomorrow. I've no doubt that she'll be tired, and it's going to take awhile, but she's finally thoroughly on the mend. I told her to listen to her body and don't expect to be back in fighting trim immediately. I hope she'll resume karate sometime this week--slowly--but don't expect she'll be able to make it through an entire class at first.

I took pictures at the belt tests at our dojo Saturday morning, and the girls and I went to a matinee of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Guthrie this afternoon, but otherwise we've pretty much stayed quietly at home. It'll be nice to resume something closer to our regular schedule tomorrow. For one thing, it'll be the first time I've been back to my own karate class for over two weeks.

I think your previous comment on why you're thankful for modern meds ought to be required reading for anyone, most especially any parent, who goes on about how things were better in the old days. It occurs to me that our times have a lot to brag about in this story: that a girl could compete in a sport at all, that an American girl could compete and excel in in a martial art that evolved in Asia, most importantly that she was able to survive this sudden illness and will probably be back to full fighting strength in only a few weeks, and that you could get some support through the hard stuff from around the world.

I'm always reminded how I love living in the future not only when I read a story like this, but on the other side something like Little Women or What Katy Did where an accident or illness lays someone up for months or years.

I was thinking of you guys all weekend, and hoping that the silence didn't mean things had gotten worse again. I'm glad she's finally recovering and hungry - I hope things go smoothly from here on out. How are you holding up?

Well, I'm exceedingly glad that things are getting a little back to normal.

It was an extremely stressful and emotional week, there's no doubt about it.

That's so great. I'm glad for you both.

How did you like the Guthrie? One of my close friends from high school is a stagehand/junior electrician there. I've always wanted to go see it.

We liked the Guthrie very much indeed! This was, I think, the third show I've seen there at their new space. It was quite a good production, v. high energy and fun. I've seen two or three other different productions of Midsummer Night's Dream, at the old location.

That's terrific news!

Was this just virulent and somewhat atypical strep, or was something else going on, did you find out? (Feel free, of course, not to answer.)

The tests didn't indicate anything other than strep, but yes, it was atypically virulent. Usually the fever doesn't get quite so high or hang on so long.
