Today's experiment with the new ice cream maker:

Avocado Ice Cream

Ingredients:

1/2 pint (250 ml) double (heavy) cream
1 TB fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup granulated sugar
3/4 pint (750 ml) milk
3 ripe avocados

Directions:

Take the avocados, peel and seed them and then put into blender with the milk and make a purée. Pour the purée into a mixing bowl, add the sugar, lemon juice and cream and beat until creamy. Then transfer the complete mixture into an ice cream maker and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

I personally thought it was ravishingly delicious. I can't tell you what my family thinks of it, because every one of them refused to touch it and have never tasted it. So the whole batch is mine, bwahahahaha.

Just don't look too closely at the level of saturated fat.

We used to make avocado ice candies. Just plastics filled with milk, sugar, and avocado, and frozen solid. At least I hope that's the recipe; my grandmother would fill the freezer with them. Great relief from heat/hunger.

Chortle like a supervillain at your good fortune.

I don't know if you have pearl (tapioca balls) tea shops out in in the Twin Cities, but if you do, look for one that knows how to make an avocado green tea smoothie. Oh, $DEITY, it's good.

Also, the the California Avocado Growers have successfully lobbied Nature to classify any fats in avocados as Good.

Avocados and cream are both Good Fat! And I am avocado-green with envy.

Cream is Good Fat? I thought any animal fat was instantly dubbed Bad Fat.

Not this decade. The Bad Fats are trans-fatty acids, produced by partially hydrogenating vegetable oils to make them solid at room temperature. So margarine Bad, butter Good. Also fish oil Extra Super Good.

Mmm, I disagree. Sat fats are still Bad, they're just not THE Bad. :)

On second thought, I feared that this sounded like I disagreed with you that trans fats are worse. I certainly don't; I've been avoiding them to some degree or another for about eight years now. I just disagree that sat fat is considered good -- it's just not AS bad. (With a few weird exceptions, like coconut oil, which is sat fat but now they're saying it reacts differently in the body than animal-based sat fat.)

Of course, who knows what they'll say next year? Nutrition is a deeply frustrating field.... :)

Feel free to drop off any leftovers at our house! I have a weakness for anything with avocados in it, as well as for any kind of ice cream.

Sounds yummy.
Avocado shakes are one of my favorite recent food discoveries, available at many pho restaurants.

This looks wonderful Peg. When I make this I plan to add some fresh ground white pepper to some of the mix. I want to see if that will brighten the flavors. Ummm or maybe a swirl of yellow heirloom tomato ice too?

Peed and seed?

God knows I've made ice creams like that, but I suspect it's a typo for "peel".

We have a pink-grapefruit and Campari sorbet going; I wish I could put a scoop of mine next to a scoop of yours.

Oops! *Snerk* Have fixed.

Pink grapefruit is something I want to get around to trying.

High acid citrus fruits are tough to make ice creams with. Ices, sorbet etc are much easier to pull off at home.

You're doing it on purpose now, right? Making wonderful, exotic flavours because you know no one else in the family will eat them? :-D

That's one (small) advantage of cooking for the picky: more good stuff for me!

Makes me wish I had someone picky to cook for. No matter what I make, it's gone before I can get seconds. *sigh*

I got the Cuisinart maker sold at Crate and Barrel. I love it. My favorite recipes are the Avocado Ice Cream and the Watermelon Sorbet.

That sounds brilliant! I must try it. I have a Cuisinart ice-cream maker too, and it has substantially increased our standard of living. :) My favorites are citrus sorbets and Bittersweet Chocolate Sorbet: 1/2 to 3/4 cup sugar, 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa, 2 cups hot water, 2 teaspoons vanilla; stir together until dissolved, chill, and churn. Brilliant, though it doesn't keep well.

Hummmm. Fruit. Cream, not evil milk.

Normally I would study this for months before attempting, but since you love it so much, I will ask W how brave he's feeling this month.

We love gelatto, but it's pricy--so are learning to make sorbettos and gelatto with cream, or milk cooked for and hour at 350.

I think everything I've tried so far would be too tame for you, except the key line (and boy, does that get your attention!) The family would poach the chocolate or apple cider...
