What I did today to make the world a better place: I inquired at the customer service desk of my local co-op if they had any pay-the-cashier-a-dollar-and-it-goes-to-food-shelves sort of programs, and they do, a community fund. They give out grants to organizations that focus on:
Environmental protection and/or beautification
Sustainable agriculture programs
Cooperative related activities
Community development and capacity building
So I gave a dollar to the cashier when she rang my purchase up.

I talked to my dad yesterday, and he said he'd gone out to make a delivery and came in, and while he'd been out, the ladies who work for him had heard about a local family, with a young son with leukemia, who could not afford gas for a hospital visit. They made up a little pool of money, called the mother, who came in to get it crying. I could not understand why the local churches weren't involved at all, since there are so many in my hometown area, but that's a whole different story. He had me in tears.

I do not think you are alone in the desire to decrease world suck.

Not sure where you're located, [livejournal.com profile] prunesnprism, but the American Cancer Society runs a free program nationwide called Road to Recovery, where volunteer drivers bring patients to and from treatments and hospital visits at no charge. If you can get word to that family, they can call ACS at 1.800.ACS.2345 for Road services and dozens of other programs, too, all free.

I am so impressed with your commitment to take action. There are several current plans I've had to donate some stuff to certain organizations and just haven't gotten off my butt to do them. You, on the other hand, are definitely putting your money (and time, and effort) where your mouth is. The world needs more people like you, and fewer like me. :P

Whoa, whoa. I am NOT making these entries to make people feel worse about themselves. Second of all, I really doubt that I could have done as much at the stage of life you're at now, with still very young kidlets.

Besides, who are you kidding? You, who has sent me all sorts of lovely care packages? Don't you think that decreases worldsuck? It sure did for me.

Don't insult my friends! ;-)

Oh, I didn't mean I read your entries and feel terrible about myself, so PLEASE don't feel blogging about your achievements is having that effect. Only appreciating that you are, in fact, taking action and making a steady real difference to people in the world, every single day. I do recognize that sometimes I'm able to decrease worldsuck, but there are other times when it becomes a "I mean to do that someday" or "this year, I will" Good Intention that doesn't become action. :P So, rather than berating myself, it's more that I see you as a role model for what I should strive for, even if I'm apparently not ready to do it yet. (Same goes for your martial arts commitment, btw.)

I'd actually like to send you more treats, but I don't want to undermine your health efforts! (Besides, I know you have an eager baker right in your own home. :))
