The good news is that I'm walking without the cane now, mostly without pain.

The bad news is that I'm suspecting now it's more likely a problem with a ligament rather than the hamstring. It's on the side of the knee rather than the back. And I know ligaments take longer to heal.

I figure I'll wait until Monday, no exercise, and then see how it feels when bent. If I still get the same pain, I'll call the doctor then.

What I did today to make the world a better place Started following CaseFoundation and SocialAction on Twitter, and I passed along the Case Foundation's Change contest on Twitter

I had a conversation with a coworker today about this Decrease Worldsuck project. Hey, spreading the idea! I also purchased a used copy (recycling!) of this book, to take along with me when I go to work at the orphanage in Mexico. I was thinking: I don't know Spanish; how can I communicate with the kids? Everyone I've talked with who went said it's not a problem, the kids just love to play with you, even if you can't speak each other's language. Then I thought, string figures! l LOVED doing string figures when I was a kid. And two people can play cat's cradle together, passing the string back and forth. You can't come up with a cheaper way to have fun than a piece of string. And this book has hundreds of string figures to teach, with pictures! So I found a used copy of the book for $2; I'll leave it down in Mexico when I leave.

Economical, fun, interactive and imaginative! Sounds like a great gift to give to the kids!

FWIW, I pulled/twisted my knee a few weeks back falling on the ice. Putting on an ACE wrap for the first week or so, and then on days I know I am going to be on it more, has helped a lot. The wrap makes me both more careful with it and gives it some extra support.

I'm not saying don't see a doc if it doesn't get feeling better (my wife would kill me if I suggestested that :); just trying to offer something that my make it more bearable until you figure it out.

...I'm walking without the cane now...

I misread this as "I'm walking without the canoe". My brain immediately supplied the paddle, but then my eye separated "cane" and "now", much to my disappointment.

The canoe would be no use in midwinter, anyway.

But ice the area as often as you can -- just give it a break of 15 min/30 min without the pack, to warm up again. You could even alternate between hot packs and cold packs, as long as you finish with cold.

If you're skin is becoming mottled, stop icing -- that's an allergic reaction to cold (or so a therapist explained to me. It doesn't last, but you should be careful to protect that hand or arm

If you think it's about the knee, you really should get to a doctor asap, just to be safe, when knees go, they really go.

The string book is a very excellent idea!! And a good thing to practice on the plane ride down there for you and the girls.

Actually, it'll be a bus trip. All the more time to practice.
