As I type this entry, I am indulging in one of the best ways I know to beat the heat: Luigi's Real Italian Ice, which I get at the local grocery. Tart, cold, refreshing, lovely on a hot, humid night.

This is amusing. Bruce Bethke sent it to me.

I am feeling overwhelmed by my house. It's a mess, and the yard is like a jungle. I've never been so disorganized in my gardening as I have this year. I seeded the plot by the garage, and nothing came up. The vegetable plot has tomatoes and basil, but I didn't plant anything else, and weeds are taking over. (Karen, I haven't forgotten your kind offer to come over and help weed, but have been feeling too scattered to even call. Maybe in the next week sometime).

Came home, looked around and groaned, spent an hour picking up the living room and dining room, started two loads of laundry, mowed half the back yard and stuffed a garbage bag full of weeds until the heat and humidity drove me indoors again. Sorta never got around to eating dinner.

*Sigh.* Elinor Dashwood is feeling very forlorn tonight.

Dear Elinor,

So pernicious, this putting things in writing, as one never knows whose eyes will peruse the page. I myself have been forced to adopt a false name and leave out many truths of my life lest the page be seen by those who have no business to know. ;)

Post-vacation is always difficult, but Italian Ice is quite nice! Hang in there!

Poor Elinor!

Remember the scene in the movie, where Elinor is bringing a cup of tea to comfort her sister? Marianne spurns it, and her mother spurns it; and even her little sister. And, though in many ways she has it the hardest of them all, she does not hurl herself into a room and slam the door and burst into tears. In any case there are no rooms left for her to retreat to; they have all been claimed by people greedier for self-pity than she is. So she sits on the step outside all the closed doors, and drinks the tea herself.

Elinor needs that cup of tea right now. And to know that she has friends who love her and wish her only the best.

The offer of weeding help is still open, though most weekends aren't. You'll be amazed how much we get done.

Karen. [weeding is one of my superpowers]
