For the maybe twenty of you out there who have read Emerald House Rising, I was listening to Sting's The Soul Cages the other day, and it occurred to me once again that there's a lyric on that album (Why should I Cry for You) that perfectly fits Captain Kett, thinking about Lady Rinnelle when he's out at sea and hardening his heart because he despairs that she'll never love him (if you ignore the earth-centric geographic references, of course).

It's kinda fun when you find a lyric that fits a work of fiction perfectly. And gee, if you know of any other song lyrics that fit characters or situations in my fiction, point them out to me, willya? Thanks.

*looks at iPod playing that very CD right now*

Hmm... I love that CD and that song (well, I have a great and t00by love for Sting and anything he does in general). I think I shall have to go and read Emerald House Rising now. *adds to 'to read' list*

*uses icon from Sting songset just because*

That song is very appropriate for Captain Kett! I just finished reading Emerald House Rising and I loved it. I wish I could write coherent reviews, but literary analysis is not my forte.

What I loved about it: I loved the idea of magic being about possibilities and how when Jena first "wakes" up to her magic how she effects events without meaning to.

I loved the character of Lady Kestrienne -- she's such an independent woman and I loved her wit.

I loved how Jena and Bram both change and grow and how they end up in the end of the book -- not definitely together, but working in that direction -- possibly. :)

And I loved the detail and expertise in which you describe the art of gemcutting -- it was very interesting and insightful.

I just wanted to let you know I enjoyed the book very, very much. I have Wild Swans as well and I'm going to read that next.

Well, that's certainly a coherent review! Thanks for the day-brightener. And please do let me know what you think of The Wild Swans if/when you read it. I love hearing reader reactions.

I would have already read EHR if I could bloody find a copy when I actually have money on me. *grumbles* Eventually I'm sure that I'll end up admitting defeat and ordering it off of Amazon. Then they will dangle free shipping in front of me and I will be forced (completely against my will) to buy celtic music and picture books to qualify for it. And it will be all your fault. Just so you know.

Haven't read Emerald House Rising, but I just finished The Wild Swans, and I wanted to tell you how much I liked it! I've been reading your journal for a while, but only just now read it. Wow, I really should have done so earlier. I loved the parallel plotlines - especially how the ghosts in the graveyard were linked to the baths. You have a marvelous voice that makes your writing compelling, and real talent for involving the reader emotionally in the story. Like everyone else, I had a lump in my throat when Sean died. Peg, please don't doubt your talent as a writer. You write beautifully - don't give up. I am sure that your next book will be every bit as touching and thoughtful as The Wild Swans! :)
