I was called up before lunch, on a criminal matter this time. I liked the judge a lot; he was exceedingly polite to all the jurors and took great care to explain everything. The judge asked a series of questions; when I responded affirmatively to a couple of them, I was questioned further in private, and then the counsel for both sides conferred with the judge and decided they didn't want me on the panel. I was the first potential juror released. I didn't blame them in the least, given my answers.

So, back to the jury room again. I pulled out The Children of Hurin and spent a pleasant afternoon immersed in its pages. We were released at 4:00 to go home.

Oh, I like these. I got them from the blog Jane Austen Quote of the Day (which I have syndicated as [livejournal.com profile] j_austen_quotes). They are by James Austen, Jane's older brother, from The Loiterer, a journal he edited and published while he was at Oxford. (It seems he considered himself the writer in the family, though his sister Jane would eventually outstrip him.)
