I received a letter from them, telling me again what times their services run. The pastor added a personal note at the bottom saying, "Yes, this is a form letter, but I just wanted to say it was really enjoyable to talk to you. I hope to see you again and certainly look forward to meeting your daughters."

The girls are extremely intrigued. We are all impressed with this church's wooing skills.

Wouldn't it be nice if the church took care of you as often as you take care of the church?

Either that or beware the Kool-Aid.

I'm sure you get a better sense of them in person than with their reminders, and certainly, your first account sounded like a really postive encounter. It's entirely possible that they felt a connection to you, too - and who wouldn't? Yes, I know I'm not a Christian, but I've been in my share of church communities. Some you can just get a "feeling" about very quickly. Some take a little longer. Some come on very strong and turn out to be enthusiastic because there are hidden problems.

I sincerely hope this one is one of the "instant connection" places (like my mother's church) and not the latter (like one of the places in their cluster).

Still... I'm biased by my natural distrust of organized religion, so I'd be starting to feel "pushed" - but maybe that's just my personal heebie-jeebies.

Fingers crossed for ya.

I suppose comparisons to cult tactics would not be helpful at this point.

I think that's great and I will say Protestant churches are way better at this than Catholic churches, which as a rule make no effort to make people feel welcome. I think it sounds wonderful, it shows they care about building a community.

There are certainly no lack of Protestant churches who don't make that kind of effort either. Of course, the flip side of that is that mainstream Protestant churches are not (IME) remarkable about evangelizing the unchurched so much as receiving burn-outs from the Catholics, Fundimentalist Protestant, and other mainstream churches. Everyone's got a role to play in the Body.

It's certainly heartening that they are giving you no lack of opportunity to find out if this is the church for you. There are enough people here warning you to examine their "product" and not just their enthusiasm, so I'll go the other way and say that I'm glad to see that they're not hiding their light under a basket.
