What Scott said exactly! You are one of my most admired writers on LJ, because you are thoughtful, compassionate, open, and a person of amazing integrity.
I've missed a couple of your "hey, why don't y'all introduce yourselves" posts, so I'll say something now. When I first got my own LiveJournal (a couple years ago?), my brother baldanders suggested your Journal as one I would enjoy. I think I started reading your Journal before I read your books (which I have since read and enjoyed very much.) I stay reading your Journal because what you write touches my heart, and because I very much admire your efforst to stay true and balanced.
I have been thoughtless; it never occurred to me to introduce myself and let you know what I thought of you. Everything scott_lynch said is more true than he knows; he didn't know that I read your journal, or the poster before me, or (I suspect) any number of other anonymous but regular readers.
I have admired and respected you ever since I randomly picked up Wild Swans several years ago; a few years after that I found your journal, and I became a particularly regular reader ever since I began dating my boyfriend, who is the single dad of a six year old son. Your words on parenting, marriage, writing, and life have been more thought provoking and encouraging than I can express. Even the posts where you question yourself are encouraging; if someone I look up to as much as you doesn't always know the answer, well then maybe I'm not so lost.
I mean this in the least scary way possible, but I do hope that someday I can grow up to be something like you. My dream is to have a decent career as an attorney (public interest or primarily pro bono) and yet still be able to write, however slowly, books of the Wild Swans ilk...and all while raising children as best I can, with a husband who loves me and who I love fiercely. I don't know how you manage the legal field, writing, and your family (I am currently struggling enough with paralegal work and balancing my boyfriend and his son and my friends!), but the fact that you can--and that you can be happy and successful while doing it--gives me hope.
Please do not let sporkbutts affect you or your posting. For every single sporkbutt reader there are easily two dozen intelligent readers who think you are a queen among ljers.
Thank you for your kind words, too, Quinn. I have been feeling quite low lately, and it's humbling and yet comforting--if somewhat bewildering when I feel at my lowest! to think that I can be an inspiration for others.
*snerk* Between me, you and Scott, we seemed to have coined a new LJ insult: sporkbutts. Perhaps I should change the title of my LJ to "No Sporkbutts Allowed."
(annieways, are you taking note? A new insult to add to your list!
