[livejournal.com profile] von_krag brought to my attention that Apple has issued a recall on some of the G5 machines due to power supply problems. When the tech took the machine apart, he discovered that was indeed the problem: the supply had burned out and fried the motherboard. The motherboard can be replaced immediately, but they have to order the power supply. It is in stock; they just have to ship it in. Best scenario: I'll get my computer back by the weekend, hopefully. This is fully covered and clearly a defect in the manufacture of the G5 which Apple is taking pains to repair.

I'm surprised they're not CRUing it.

Also, why're you getting a rabies shot? Did the bat actually bite/scratch you?

It's conservative, but the protocol recommended by the Minnesota Board of Health is to denote what happened to me, waking up to find a bat flying around the room (two nights in row in fact) a possible exposure (bat bites are tiny, and you can't often tell if you've been bit). We had the first bat tested, but the results were inconclusive; the second bat got away, so my doctor did recommend the shots.

(People have been arguing cheerfully in my LJ about reasonable assessment of this risk on and off over the last week or so.)

I'm feeling pretty sick tonight after the shots, but the shots themselves weren't too bad.

Question from the ignorant (and since Rob's on the phone and I can't ask him) what's "CRUing it?"

Hi.

There's been really really extensive discussion of this in the past several days about this.

If you'd like to read the information provided in previous posts, it in fact answers all of your misgivings. (Yes, in fact, one CAN miss a bat bite. They don't hurt too much. People often sleep through them. Just as an example.)

So in fact, while it was a precautionary thing and hey, who knows, probably she wasn't bitten, it was *most certainly* reasonable.

So can people, you included, stop second guessing her? I feel like I'm listening to sports radio here, as opposed to what I usually find in Peg's LJ, which is people discussing issues from all angles but being supportive of Peg.

And, now that I re-read this, I think I have to apologize for letting my temper get the best of me.

Sorry about that, both Peg and Moony. Sigh.

Here's hoping. I'll hold my thumbs for you. :)

At least it's a problem people are prepared to recognize, and that the manufacturer is taking responsibility for. That's better than the protracted wearisome fight just to get someone to agree that there's a problem they should fix - though I know this whole business has been protracted and wearisome enough.

Well, at least that's something. Not that the problem is good, but that they're widely aware of it and it won't cost you any money. Can your info be saved? Does the repair generally fix things for the life of the computer?

All the data was there, absolutely unharmed, thank goodness. And the store backed it all up, so we have an extra backup. (Yay!) We bought the extended service plan so we have a three year warranty, but Apple is recalling all these power supplies anyway and would have fixed it without that warranty. As it is, it failed within six months, so it would have been within the standard one-year warranty, although this power supply problem is being fixed for anyone within two years of buying a machine.
