I cleaned up the desk (took about ten minutes) and then spent the rest of the hour reviewing all the LiveJournal entries I'd printed out about the book, re-tracing my brainstorming process. This was really useful: first of all, it reassured me that I have been making process. It also reminded me of thoughts I'd forgotten.

One new idea--well, sort of new: I think that Rolf will meet his downfall at the end of the book from the ice statues which the magic has brought to life. Maybe the ice palace will collapse on him, too. I like the idea that he meets his end, not because Solveig or Jack have raised a hand against him, but because he becomes literally entombed in ice. A literal embodiment of the heart of stone (ice).

I might use that Franz Kafka quotation as an epigraph for the book: "A book should be an axe for the frozen sea within us."

Was Kafka referring to the writer, the reader, or both?

Can't say that I know. I'm not familiar with the context for the quotation.
