Tomorrow, as part of Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work, Fiona is going to be visiting Rob's store and spending the day with him, learning about his job. The last two years, she has spent this day with me at my office, learning about my job.
I'd like her to give her the chance to learn about a lot of jobs. Specifically, your job.
Won't you tell Fiona about your job, so she can get an idea of the vast possibilities in the World of Work out there?
If you can, please leave Fiona a comment by tomorrow night, telling her about your career. Something like:
What your job title is, and what that means
A description of a typical day
What you need in the way of training/education/experience to do this job
Why you like it and (if you dare)
Why you dislike it
What sorts of things can go wrong at your job?
What kind of person thrives in your job
Anything else you can think of that would give her an idea of what it might be like to choose your career?
I'd like her to get as many replies as possible. Thanks ever so much!
Cheers,
Peg (and Fiona)

My Job
Date: 2003-04-24 05:38 am (UTC)A typical day depends on what time of year it is. If it's the winter, there aren't many that work at the store, so you have to do a lot of different jobs. As a checker, you scan a customer's purchase for the most part. But you have to remember a lot of codes for the produce items. And some things just don't seem to scan every time, so you have to remember a lot of prices, too.
One of the other jobs I've done there is sort the shelf tags for the weekly sales and price changes and put them up. That can take hours and boy, do you have to know your store!
One summer, I worked on the night crew for the produce department. That means I worked from 10 PM to 6:30 AM stocking the produce when the store was closed. It was hard work. I'd cut up the fruit for the fruit cups and trays. I'd stock the bags of salads, check the tomatoes for bad ones. Stock the starwberries, corn, etc etc.
And I'd also stock the Krispy Kreme dounuts when they arrived! And bring in the newspapers, too.
Mostly, though, it's just checking. That is sort of the thing I don't like about the job. There are too many people during the summer! Most are very nice, but there will always be a few nasty people. And that is hard on the kids the store hires as summer checkers. Sometimes, that is their first job ever. And some people are so mean to them.
But during the winter, it's all the year-round people, and I mostly know all of them. Or they knew my family. And it's a lot quieter. During the summer, you can get so busy you don't know what day it is. It can be very exhusting.
