pegkerr: (Both the sweet and the bitter)

Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] vegan_lunchbox, I bought Laptop Lunches for me and Delia. Delia had to rush out the door before I could take a picture of hers, but here's mine for the first day: Chicken orange curry with lentils in the back (from [livejournal.com profile] naomikritzer), a vegetable medley in the front (cauliflower, broccoli, artichoke hearts and beans marinated in Newman's own balsamic vinagrette), cantelope (there was a frantic search for the melon baller this morning) and homemade chocolate yogurt: melt chocolate chips in the microwave with a TB of water for one minute, and stir in plain yogurt.

Delia had the melon and chocolate yogurt, also, and then she had a sandwich and some sliced orange bell pepper. The goal is to try to include one fruit and one vegetable each day. We are going to have to do some heavy-duty exploring of vegetables for Miss Delia. I was frankly surprised that she agreed to the sliced bell pepper, since she has usually refused it in the past. Perhaps her new Laptop Lunchbox gives the bell pepper an exciting new glamour.

I won't be posting our lunches each day, goodness knows, but just thought I'd show off our starting attempt.

Edited to add: Well, that was certainly more than enough food for one adult for lunch. The marinated vegetables leaked just a little bit, but then, I hadn't put the cover on that compartment. I'll know to do that next time. I would say that the first day, at least for me, was a success.

Edited to add again: Delia handled the bell pepper in her lunch by--simply not eating any of it. Which is what I expected she would do. Just a few bites of the sandwich, 1/2 of the cantelope, and all of the chocolate yogurt. She is a slow eater, and it is a continual problem that she doesn't finish her lunch.

Looks pretty cool. Let us know how it works out (the laptop lunchbox containers). I'm specially curious about the not having lids works. Do you need to keep the bag flat to keep the food from leaking out?

I checked when I got in to work today. There was a little leakage from the yogurt, but not too much, and it was easily wiped up. I am not sure what would have happened if I had carried it sideways for a long time.

One of the containers does have a lid, so you can put wet ingredients in it, but not the small container that we used today for the yogurt. We'll see what Delia reports when she gets home tonight.

There is a local store that carries them. Check the website I linked to to see if there is a local retailer for you, or you can order them direct from the website. It is more expensive that way. I think they're $30 off the website, but Lakewind had them for $18.

Looks yummy!

There's a couple of lunchbox groups on Flickr you may be interested in. Bento Boxes is for bento-style lunches. I've seen photos similar to your Laptop Lunchbox there, so this photo would fit right in. There's also the Mr. Bento porn group, for folks who have the Mr. Bento lunch jar. I have a Mr. Bento, which I LOVE. Both groups provide plenty of lunch ideas, and are fun to browse.

I might need to invest in these for my husband. He is always taking his lunch, multiple things, and this would be great.

Your lunch looks so yummy!

Thanks for the link!!! I've been looking for something like this for ages. For myself, not kids. I think I'll order one! Hmmm, decisions. Primary Colors or Whimsical?

If you don't mind driving to Lakewinds Grocery in Minnetonka, you can get it for $18, as opposed to $30 on line.

No lids???? What's up with that? Maybe I won't buy them after all. Not spilling in transit is one of the essential characteristics I look for in a "lunch system."

*sigh* Why is this so hard to find? I just want a lunch-box with 3 or 4 lidded containers that fit neatly inside it. It seems to me that Tupperware used to sell a set like that, but I haven't seen one for many years.

Two of the containers do have lids, one of the two large ones, and the tiny one that is used for salad dressing, etc (not pictured). Their reasoning is that usually families pack just one "wet" food, and that the lid of the lunchbox, which sits flush against the small boxes, keeps the other food in place. I'll let you know whether that is in fact true. You can use plastic wrap over a small box, I suppose, although I wanted to try without the first day.

Hmm. Well, that actually does make sense. I usually bring just one gloopy leftover, along with something like crackers or fruit or salad. As long as the lid fits tight enough to keep the salad from escaping, that ought to work. And I work in Eden Prairie, so driving to Minnetonka isn't out of the question. .... thinking it over.... big decision here...

I typed "Tupperware lunch" into eBay's search engine, and a number of items came up that might suit what you've described. (They also had bento-style boxes, like what Peg just bought.)

I know EXACTLY what Tupperware unit you are talking about- I had one as a tween and beyond... I don't know what ever happened to it but it was the BEST! It was rectangular with a lid then a plastic strap thing that it fit in to provide handles. It had various containers that fit inside in different combinations (including a cup with a lid).

I am really interested in whether the lunchbox is really a big improvemet over other lunchboxes, because I'm going to start packing a lunch next year. Did you get just the box and inner tray or the whole shebang? Is it worth it?

I didn't see your picture at first and clicked over to the company's web site. At first it looked like they packed a lunch in their box and shipped it to you! Now that would be a service I would pay for: someone packs me a healthy lunch and delivers it to me. We could swap yesterday's empty box for today's full one. In India, there are services that will collect your lunch from your wife and deliver it to you at your office. You see guys on motorcycles or mopeds speeding down the street with boxes of lunches bungie-corded to the backs. Given the number of pick-ups and drop-offs, the error rate is remarkably low; something like one in 4,000.
