Grocery run

I've been going crazy because there haven't been enough fruits and vegetables in the house, so I swung by Seward Co-op and bought:

Fresh kale
Mesclun lettuce mix
Parsley (I want to make some hummus)
Fresh figs (had one; it was soooo good)
Cilantro
Mushrooms
Red Cabbage (I have taken to bringing sliced raw red cabbage tossed with rice vinegar, a smidgen of sugar, and caraway seeds for lunch.)

The first thing that strikes me about this list is that it's pretty healthy.

The second thing is that no one else in my family will eat any of it.

I'd happily help you with the mesclun mix and the mushrooms; a bit of parsley and red cabbage could be mixed with the mesclun, but I don't like either by itself.

Figs, like kiwifruit, make my tongue itch if less than perfectly ripe; being unable to tell in time whether they're safe, I must avoid them, alas.

Also, I gather your immediate family are sufficiently picky about vegetables that you shouldn't let their preferences determine what you buy (though buying the vegetables they will eat, as a supplement to what you're getting for yourself, seems reasonable).

I'd pass on the red cabbage--it's one of the few vegetables I don't like (mainly the texture). The rest sounds great. As it happens, this morning I bought a large sweet potato and a mango.

I've just discovered kale. I had it in a stoup that I got from a Rachel Ray cookbook. It was really good! I have a half a bunch left. I may saute it with butter, olive oil and garlic later this week!

I simmer it in a combination of apple cider and orange juice, and then add onion, apple and bacon. Mmm.

Wow, I like that combination! Adding fruit to unexpected dishes is really fun. Today, I made cous-cous with fresh parsley and raisins. The parsley gave it a bite and the raisins mixed well with the butter/chicken stock mixture the cous-cous was cooked in.

Do you still have the recipe for that Hobbit's Stew?

Bilbo's Underground Stew, you mean? Here ya go. The nice thing is that this website will adjust the measurements of the ingredients depending on how many servings you tell it that you want.

I was just thinking yesterday that I'd like to make it again; I've been craving it lately.

It looks really good! Plus, it has veggies that I've haven't used a lot. I'm trying to broaden my veggie horizons. It's working, but it's a slow process lol.

Yeah, me too. I'd never really eaten parsnips or turnips or kohlrabi before trying this stew, but I love the taste of it. And I feel so virtuous eating it.

If you try it, let me know what you think. I think it's really delicious.

I like kale (or, even better, chard) sauteed with garlic and crushed red pepper and then made into tacos with soft corn tortillas, salsa, and feta cheese.

Hmm, I've never put parsley in hummus. I've seen it sprinkled on top, but I'm surprised to see it as a must. I always enjoy seeing how many different ways there are to approach the same recipe.

I'll have to try that treatment for red cabbage! Occasionally I get one from the CSA, and it, along with cauliflower, is a vegetable I can never figure out just what to do with. (Though last week I steam-sauteed cauliflower with garlic, jalapenos, chicken broth and a dash of soy, and it was yummy.)

You don't have to put parsley in hummus, of course, and I rarely see it served that way in Middle Eastern restaurants. But it is there in the Moosewood Cookbook recipe that I have, and I'm trying to increase my green leafies.

The (raw) cabbage is particularly good if you marinate it in the rice vinegar/sugar/caraway seed mixture overnight, btw.

Fools, the rest of your family are FOOLS! (Sorry, I've just taken an online test that told me I'm a pirate and it's gone to my head.)

One of the things that's... well, distressing about living in what essentially a group home, is how weird some of the folks here are about food. At lunch today the cook laid out some seaweed salad and ya would'a thought she was trying to sell puke in a bowl. I mean, some of these folks have barnacled hallucinations, but they can't deal with a little kelp...
