pegkerr: (Fiona and Delia)

Both Fiona and Delia passed their pre-test today, so they will both be testing for their next belts Saturday morning. Fiona will test for brown belt, and Delia for brown stripe. Once a student passes brown belt, they will be addressed by everyone at the dojo with the honorific "Mr." or "Ms."

It was a joy to watch them in class on Monday. I couldn't quite see Delia (their class is quite crowded) but got a good view of Fiona as she pistoned out her side kicks, rock steady. She has a particularly powerful side kick. Gorgeous. I am so proud of them both.

I plan to remind sensei again about getting me trained in on dojo cleaning so I can start my trial month to see if I really want to do this. I am having more doubts, but I will try it for a month.

Will Fiona be Ms. Fiona or Ms. [surname] once she passes her brown belt test?

She'll be "Ms. [surname]" until Delia gets her brown belt, which may take another two or three months, I think. Then they will be Ms. Fiona [surname] and Ms. Delia [surname] to distinguish the two of them, since they are in the same class. There are some other sibling pairs who are advanced belts, too, and that's what the custom is.

Is Fiona's next test (after this) for the black belt, or is there a black stripe intermediary step, first? I'm SO impressed that they've achieved such high levels at comparatively young ages. Go them! *applauds*

After the brown belt, there are two belts before black belt: one black stripe and two black stripes.

Yeah, yeah, I know. We belong to a typical American dojo, which means there are too many belts, only because Americans are impatient to see signs of their progress. I'm more inclined to just watch them to see how much better they've become. It's just a joy to watch them.

What a lovely way of giving ongoing recognition of maturity and responsibility at a stage when it might be all too easy for them to focus on the black belt that they don't have yet.

Our children spent several teenage summers working through the ranks on a tall ship training crew. It was wonderful to see them refer to their 17yo senior officers as Mr. and Ms. completely seriously, whether or not they were on duty. There were several of these young men and women whose first names I could never remember, since our kids always talked of them as Mr. X.
