Hot cereal

As an experiment, I bought a 1.5 quart slow cooker (a mere $10 at Target) and I'm trying different combinations of overnight crockpot hot cereal recipes. A few nights ago, I tried oatmeal and apples. Well, I thought it was delicious, but the girls turned their noses up at it. Tonight I threw in a combination of oatmeal, wild rice, barley, wheat germ, apples, dried cranberries and vanilla.

I can't wait to see how it turns out tomorrow morning.

A confident prediction: nobody else in my family will touch it.

Anyone have any hot cereal crock pot recipes to share?

No recipes to share, I'm afraid, but it's a wonderful idea. What proportions do you use for the two you mentioned, if you don't mind my asking?

I've seen a couple of sites that say that you use a proportion of one part grain to two parts liquid. I think you just need to experiment. Cook on low for six to eight hours.

I love slow-cooked oatmeal--the texture is creamy and wonderful--but it has to be plain. Adding stuff in is gross, esp. first thing in the morning, when my stomach (a wimp at all times) does not want adventure, just some milk and brown sugar on top. Maybe the girls have the same bland taste?

Hmmm - I wonder how that would work in my single-temperature crockette?

I've been wanting to do a savory oatmeal - or at least one with some additional protein in it, which means something like diced canadian bacon or pre-cooked sausage. I've been thinking of oatmeal, meat, maybe some raisins? and topping it off with shredded parmesan.

Alton Brown has a recipe for overnight oatmeal using steel cut oats and dried fruit that I've made with great success. The recipe as written makes a lot, but it's easy to scale down.

Let me know how those recipes turn out. I *love* cooking in the crock pot!

One that I like: Take sauerkraut and put a layer of it in the crock pot. Add a layer of potatoes (red skinned are good, sliced) and a layer of pork chops. Repeat. Then pour beer in to the top, and add seasonings (caraway is good, too). Let cook all day. The alcohol cooks off and it's just nummy, IF you like sauerkraut. Very good served with baked spiced apples.

It turned out very well, and as I suspected, I was the only one willing to eat it. Delia went to school fretful because she could not figure out what to have for breakfast and so went without--even though this hot breakfast was there waiting for her. *rolls eyes*

I like the sound of your recipe VERY much--but again, I am the only one in my family who would eat it, because of the sauerkraut.

No one in my family would touch anything like that except for my Bernie. He would love it... would you mind sharing your recpts with me? That sounds like a wonderful thing for me to do for him. He is up at the 'ass crack' of dawn. He is runs his own construction, so he is out early and in late... a hot breakfast would be a nice treat. Sound yummy. :-) (even though I would not eat it, only smell it... which is close enough for me...lol)

Thank you, if you want to share... :-)
