July 21, 2007. [livejournal.com profile] heidi8 has opined that she sorta wanted another year to be able to discuss and theorize before finally finding out what happens, but I think her fears are groundless. It is not like Tolkien fans have run out of things to talk about, and the good ladies over at pemberley.com are still posting 24/7 about Jane Austen's books.

No, we won't run out of things to talk about. Even after reading the last word.

I can't speak for Heidi obviously but I suppose my wibble is more along the lines that I enjoy seeing people predict what might happen next and once we've got the last book we'll have an ending. Sure there will be debate and arguments and tons of detail to discuss but it won't be the same debates we're having now probably. That and a lingering feeling that the world is going to explode... *g*

Heh. It reminds me of the Episcopal Ghost in The Great Divorce who would rather be a daring theologian in Hell than come to a Heaven where everyone already knew the truth.

L. M. Montgomery fans are still discussing her works a century later as well. s:)

My concern is mostly centered around burnout -- oh sure, I'm certain I'll both see the movie and get the book as soon as possible, but releasing them so close together seems like a recipe for media overhype. That, and I generally don't like to mix the books and movies too closely; that will be tough if the new book triggers a series re-read for me before it comes out, and I try to see the movie when it's released.

I think I'm just having conniptions because I am so terrified of the Wrong Person Dying, which will lead to me averting my eyes and weeping single perfect tears when people discuss HP.

That's absolutely true. I don't get the people who say that after they read it they'll disappear into some other fandom. Why?

That said, I fear a rush-job on the editing; we already have some prior books that with so-so editing and I was hoping Bloomsbury would put some actual effort into editing this one. That's what makes the date seem a little too-soonish to me. I'd have been happy with a Christmas release in order to work out all of the kinks and make it as tight as possible. Carlie has speculated that the price means a perfectly ginormous book, and that's not going to edit itself!

I'm also leery of its release being so close to the film in July, because films have actors, who are pretty and get loads of attention, which should be paid to the origin of all this: THE BOOKS and THE AUTHOR. So I really don't like the two releases coming so close together like that. It'll be a freaking MESS, and after I read the book that's what I'll want to discuss, but there will be all of these people going on about the OotP movie this and the OotP movie that... which I know will be true when the sixth and seventh movies come out too, but by then we'll have had the seventh book for a little while. Why couldn't this have been spaced out better? Gah.
