Here are some pictures I took at this weekend's May Day Parade, put on by the Heart of the Beast Mask and Puppet Theater:

May Day 2007 May Day 2007
Heart of the Beast Mask and Puppet Theater presents the annual May Day parade

This snapping turtle was created in honor of the turtle that is said to live at the bottom of Powderhorn Lake

Marching bands at the May Day parade are VERY casual. No uniforms (although there may be costumes), no precision, but LOTS of fun and enthusiasm.

The baby was supposed to represent new beginnings in the water . . . it seemed cheerful, albeit vaguely creepy.

Father of the waters

Faucet on stilts

I'm not quite sure what they represented. The evils of the bottled water industry, perhaps. But many water bottles were involved.

The shrouded Tree of Life, being carried to the ceremony in Powderhorn Park

Polar bear

The Mississippi River

The walking embodiment of the Tree of Life. Another Tree of Life costume was later dramatically burned at the beginning of the ceremony at Powderhorn Park (to be replaced by the reborn fully grown Tree of Life at the end).

If it weren't for your weather, I'd consider moving to the Twin Cities - you always report on such cool stuff going on!

Btw, that photo you posted earlier was beautiful.

We lie about the weather to keep people out.

Thanks for sharing - those look great!

(I also liked the photo of the "21st C American family" from the Immigration Rights event.)

NO, no, emphatically no. This costume was not burned. They made another for the burning. This one is safe.

Ah, thank you for the clarification. I will correct.
