You called it, [livejournal.com profile] aome's husband and [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick. They bled the air out of the system, and the clutch works now, but I don't think we can take the car to Florida because I had an oil change on the 2nd, and they checked the reservoir then and it was full. Which means there's a leak somewhere, and the best guess it's the seal to the slave cylinder. They can't repair it without taking the whole clutch out, which is a two day job.

I stopped at AAA during my lunch and arranged a car rental. $500.00. And no CD player, which means we can't listen to the books on CDs on the way down that we'd planned to keep us entertained. I'll beg, but the AAA agent didn't think they have CD players unless you go up to the premium rental rate, which would be even more expensive.

Damn, damn, damn.

Cd Players...

Do you have a portable CD player? You could buy one of those tape thingy's that plugs into the tapedeck and allows you to play cd's. The $25 for it (roughly) would be worth the saved sanity on the long drive. Though you'd go through a fortune in batteries unless you bought one of those adapters that plugs into the lighter.

FWIW.

Oops! Hi, I'm Dena, hope you don't mind a random poster :)

Portable cd players with car kits that feed into the tape player in a car (it does have a tape player?) are relatively cheap.

If you have a small boom box, you can put batteries in it and just take it along. That's what I used to do when we didn't have a CD player in our car...

Does it have a tape player? And do you have a portable cd player? If you do, then you can get something that goes from the "headphones" part of the player into the tape player. And if the cd player runs off a plug, you can get something to pkug iy into the lighter port. All in all should cost about 30$

I /think/ you can also just buy an adaptor that plugs into the cigarette lighter that'd let you run a boom box tape player, too.

But I /know/ you can get the portable CD player and adaptor for like $19.99 at Best Buy. Having done it myself.

Ugh, how very annoying. We recently spent $500 on the car too, and while this did not mess up any grand trip plans, it's a big chunk of money to suddenly have to cough up.

I second the recommedation of both the portable-CD player plus adapter, and a simple boom box with good batteries and replacements. Raphael and I have used both of these to provide music on long drives both in Arizona and Minnesota. Though the boom box might create some arguments about appropriate volume.

re: the CD player.
If you have a portable discman, you can listen to it in the car. Walmart has those things where it's a tape with a wire coming out of one end and you plug the wire into the headphone jack of the portable CD player and the tape goes into the tape player. It's like $19.99.

How well do you trust this mechanic? Have you considered a second opinion? Apparently it's rare that the whole clutch has to be removed to fix the slave cylinder, so Will was just wondering if that was really necessary. But he also admits that he hasn't worked on a Cherokee clutch before.

Regardless, I hope you find a way to use the books on CD. :) How long a drive will this be?

Hmm. I'd talk to AAA -- [livejournal.com profile] anatsuno and I have rented a Chevy Cavalier from Avis and it has a CD player, as (allegedly) did all the Avis cars on their list.

If push comes to shove, I can lend you my Discman and Car-Tape-Adapter-Thingy when you arrive at Nimbus, and you can mail it to me when you're back home. Let me know if you'd like it by midday Saturday?
