My paper proposal is here. I was just winging it when I drafted it, and I have one question: What works, specifically, of Robin McKinley's deal with the heart of flesh vs. heart of stone theme? I mentioned her in the abstract; I should put her work in the paper. What, specifically? Thanks.

I think Deerskin would be a good example - the Heroine pretty much shuts off (heart of stone) after the rape (not that she was really that engaged *before* the attack, either, as I recall), and only gradually regains her sense of humanity. Also, perhaps Outlaws of Sherwood? Robin Hood continues to keep on some of the outlaws for heart-of-flesh reasons, even after sending others away for their own safety. Heck, keeping the outlaws at ALL is a heart-of-flesh decision. But in terms of the progression from heart-of-stone to one of flesh, that would be Deerskin.

"The Stone Fey" is sort of a literal take on it.

Perhaps the Hero and the Crown?
Spindle's End? Pernicia versus Aunt and Kat.
