Fiona and Corwyn had their competition this morning.

We watched their performance and they did a good job. But the competition was also excellent, and the girls didn't make it to finals. The coordinator who did the parent orientation said that Minnesota has the largest state history day competition in the country; it's half the size of the national competition. About 30,000 kids participate in National History day here in Minnesota, and a little over 1,000 made it to state. So they did really, really well to get there.

Fiona's not too broken up about not making it to nationals; she's already thinking about next year and figures she has several more years to try. But the week's hard work is catching up with her and she was really tired tonight.

I'm glad Fiona's taking it well, glad they did well enough to get this far.

I am a little startled that Corwyn is a girl and presumably has been the entire time you've been talking about them working on this project together.

Count me startled too! I didn't realize until it was brought to the forefront that everytime you'd posted about Fiona and Corwyn, a small subconscious part of me would fondly remember my grade/middle school days working on projects with my myriad boy classmates who were also good friends.
(I grew up in a "gifted program" where boys outnumbered girls about 3:1. Whatever that might say about the selection mechanism, the kids themselves were, on hindsight, remarkably gender-blind. I do rather miss those days.)

Corwyn. Female. In retrospect, the clue was there-- names involving Y seem to be more likely to be female-- but hi there, thanks for reminding me not to assume.

Corwin is a girl.

Peg is trying to rationalize this dichotomy by misspelling her name. There is not now, nor has there ever been a 'Y' in Corwin's first name. Just her last name, which is irrelevant here, unless it explains where Peg found it in the first place. Nonetheless, not Corwyn. Corwin. Girl. Smart, funny girl, to boot.
