We have suddenly had problems develop with the new computer. Rob has taken it in to the store to have the techs look at it. It keeps inexplicably shutting itself off. Keep your fingers crossed for us. Not sure if I'll be able to be online much this weekend; it depends on what the techs discover is causing the difficulty. There's the laptop, except that Rob is supposed to be using that to (finally, please God) finish the fricking taxes.

Damn it. That's a brand new (and very expensive) computer.

I had a computer built for me that did this. I packed it so full of goodies that it became too hot inside. When the CPU overheated, everything shut off. If you keep turning it back on and the time between shutdowns get shorter and shorter, this may be your situation. If it isn't happening very often, a stronger fan and a fan on top of the cpu may take care of this. Mine was so bad that we instaled a powerful fan on top of the case blowing out so all the hot air was pulled out.

Good luck.

My Mac did that (five years ago); it was a faulty something-or-other board that controlled the power switch. It was fixable, and Apple even covered the repairs since it was a known problem with my model. I will hope that the same is true for you.

The faster cpu's do tend to overheat and shut down. I have also found that many of the newer programs and games are real memory hogs. Increasing your ram might help. You didn't say what OS you were using. I use Win2000 and it seems to have a quirk in it such that I have to be sure that it isn't set to restart on the shut down program or it will keep restarting instead of completely loading itself on a reboot. I keep the task manager active so that I can also watch cpu usage as it can go to 100 percent and stay there in a heartbeat, which generally causes a shut down shortly thereafter. I figure it is because I need more ram~~on next month's agenda though. Good Luck! With the newer windows programs being a combination of windows and nt, some weird problems do develop depending upon the eapertise of the person who installed the OS and how it is configured and what you want from the machine. Getting it the way it has to be for your use may take a bit of time in the beginning, and I have found that it is worth it in the end.
